The Heritage Club Classic concluded today with wins by Azusa Pacific University and Westmont College.

In the first game, the Cougars of APU shutout Cornerstone (MI) 3-0. Kolt Callaway scored in the eighth minute of play on an unassisted goal from 17 yards out on the right side. He would score again in the 80th minute after dribbling from right to left across the front of the net, beating his defender and pushing a shot past the Golden Eagles’ keeper. In between those goals, Ian Leibbrandt connected on a pass from Richie Craven after a corner kick by Ferguson Agwu. The Cougars improved to 2-0 on the year while Cornerstone falls to 0-2-1.

Holy Names University and Westmont College battled it out in the second game which the Warriors won by a score of 3-2. The only goal of the first period came after Luke Williams drew a penalty shot at the 21st minute mark and Blake Thompson drilled the PK into the right side of the net. Strong defensive efforts by both squads kept the teams from scoring for the balance of the first half.

The Hawks of HNU (0-2) evened the score early in the second half when Tobias Edenvik flicked a pass to Marcelo Santos who punched the ball into the net from five feet away.

Game momentum was with the Hawks when WIlliams made it clear to his teammates that he wanted the ball. Moments later, Williams regained the momentum for the Warriors when he put the ball in the upper right corner of the net from 40 yards away in the 57th minute. Four minutes later, Williams passed the ball to Michael Thompson who scored from 15 yards out to give the Warriors a 3-1 advantage.

The Hawks battled back to score again in the 78th minute when Edenvik scored from seven yards out on a pass from Guilherme Souza. However, HNU could not find another goal to make up the difference. The Warriors are now 2-0 on the season and will next play against UC Santa Barbara on September 4th at Harder Stadium.
