Women’s Soccer Victorious in Conference Opener

Westmont Women’s Soccer cruised to a 8-0 victory at Russ Carr Field against Hope International University (3-6, 0-1). The Warriors scored six times in the second half outshooting the Royals 59-1 in the game. Eight different Warriors put the ball in the net, including three freshmen who scored the first goals of their college careers.

Freshman Kayla Crandall began the scoring in the fifth minute when she tapped in a from pass from sophomore Jane Wyche. Senior midfielder Katie Cates returned to the lineup after being sidelined with an injury during the team’s first scrimmage. Cates scored the second goal of the contest off an assist by sophomore Anna Gropp.

Thirty-seven seconds into the second half, senior midfielder Kristi Peich set up freshman Scottee Reid who punched the ball in for a score. Five minutes later, Peich set up Wyche who tapped in the ball from five yards away. Peich then recorded her own goal off a penalty kick.

Freshman Lindsey Milone connected on a pass from sophomore Katie Rhodes as the shot deflected off the Royal keeper, Renee Solis, and rolled into the goal. Solis had 22 saves on the day. Freshman Brianna Russo sent a cross from near the left side line to the front of the net where Rhodes scored from 5 yards out.

Junior Katie Estrada concluded the Warrior’s scoring when she scored in the 82nd minute from 20 yards out.

Westmont is now 4-4 overall and 1-0 in GSAC play. The Warriors will travel to Point Loma Nazarene to participate in a men’s/women’s soccer double header on Saturday. The Sea Lions’ women’s team is ranked number 15 in the NAIA national poll.
