#21 Westmont Ousted from Regionals on PKs

Submitted by: Ron Smith - November 3rd, 2004

The Eagles of Concordia (8-7-2) pulled of an upset on Russ Carr Field, knocking off the Warriors on penalty kicks in todays NAIA Region II first round game. After regulation ended in a 1-1 tie and two overtime periods proved to be fruitless, Concordia won the shootout four goals to three.

Senior midfielder Kristi Peich scored the games first goal with about two and one-half minutes to go in the first half. Fellow senior Katie Cates passed the ball to Peich on the right side who launched it into the high left hand corner for the goal. With ten minutes left in regulation, Ashley Pavlovich evened the score for the Eagles on a chip shot from 5 yards away. Amy Ross assisted on the goal. Though both teams had opportunities to score in the overtime periods, neither team was able to finish.

During the penalty kicks, Emalia Cornwell made a great diving save on Concordia’s second shooter, but the Warriors were unable to capitalize as one of Westmont’s shots bounced off the left post and another went wide left.

The game brings to an end Westmont’s 16-game post-season winning streak which dates back to the 2001 NAIA National Tournament. However, under the rules both teams are credited with a tie, therefore the Warriors increased their streak of “playoff games without a loss” to 17. The Warriors (9-7-2) now must wait until November 11th to learn where they will be seeded in this year’s championship.
