Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Bulldogs
Submitted by: Ron Smith - September 12th, 2005Westmont men’s soccer improved their record to 2-1-2 on Saturday by defeating the Redlands Bulldogs (1-2) by a score of 2-0. Junior goalkeeper Josh DeForest recorded the shutout.
“Josh played very well in the goal today,” reported head coach Dave Wolf. “A lot of [Redlands] shots were from long range. Our backs did a great job denying them quality opportunities. But Josh made some important saves when we needed him to, including a very impressive kick save to prevent a goal from close range.”
Westmont’s first goal came three minutes into the second half after Michael Thompson was fouled in the box. Sophomore forward Johnny Alcaraz nailed the penalty kick for the Warriors which turned out to be the winning goal.
“Our guys put in a great effort against a pretty good team. Redlands is going to win a lot of games this year,” acknowledged Wolf. “I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to run after Thursday, so I was pleased to see the effort given by the team.” The Warriors played an overtime match against Warner Pacific at Azusa on Thursday then traveled to Redlands for Saturday’s game.
The Warriors’ second goal came at the 55 minute mark. “Michael German passed a beautiful left-footed cross to Sammy [Hartman],” said Wolf, “and Sam headed it into the net. Sammy picked up his game today. He was holding the ball well and passing it well.”
Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will be back in action on Wednesday, when the Warriors take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont. The women will play at 5:00 p.m. followed by the men at 7:00.
