Men’s Soccer Records Fourth Shutout of the Season
Submitted by: Ron Smith - September 15th, 2005The Warriors posted the fourth shutout of the season on Wednesday, defeating the host Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1-0. The game was the third shutout of the season for junior keeper Logan Frank in as many starts.
‘It was the third road trip in a week – all pretty tough trips – and I was proud of the way the guys battled,” said head coach Dave Wolf. “The last 15 minutes were tough, they were agonizing to watch. At the end of the game we lost our legs. I was glad the big man [Frank] was in goal. In the last few minutes they played everything directed into the box. We just had to go up and hit, fight, clear and scrap. It wasn’t a lot of fun to watch, but we got out of there without giving up a goal.”
The game’s only goal came in the 28th minute. Luke Williams crossed the ball to Michael Thompson who came across the mouth of the goal and shot back for the score. “Michael is tough to stop on the dribble in those situations. He rides tackles well and is powerful so it is very hard to knock him off the ball,” assessed Wolf. “Luke served the ball very well. He had a lot of dangerous crosses Wednesday night.”
“The first sixty minutes, we played very, very well. The only thing we didn’t achieve that would have been important is we just couldn’t get the second goal. Once you get the second goal, it’s a different game. Johnny [Alcaraz] hit the cross bar on a free kick, Michael [Thompson] hit the cross bar, Sammy [Hartman] had a good chance and went a little wide.”
Westmont (3-1-2) hosts Notre Dame de Namur on Monday, September 19th in a 1:30 game at Russ Carr Field. The game will be the Warrior’s last non-conference competition before the start of the GSAC schedule on September 28th when the Warriors will host Concordia. A friendly homecoming game with the alumni is planed for Saturday, September 24th at 1:00 p.m.
