Submitted by: Ron Smith - November 9th, 2005

Three seniors and a junior from Westmont women’s soccer have been named as Golden State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes. In order to be eligible for the award, an athlete must be a junior or higher in standing, must have competed in half of the team’s contests and must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Seniors Katie Schick of Irvine and Katie Estrada of Fountain Valley each earned the recognition for the second year in a row. Schick is a liberal studies major with a 3.99 GPA and Estrada has earned a 3.86 GPA as a communication studies major. As a defender for the Warriors, Schick has started every game of her four year career. Estrada, who transferred to Westmont from The Master’s College following her freshman year, has provided valuable experience at the midfield position this season.
Also earning scholar-athlete recognition is senior Kylea Kangles, a liberal studies major with a GPA of 3.57. Kangles, a resident of Bakersfield, moved into the midfield position this season after playing most of her career as a defender. Kangles played ten games for the Warriors before suffering an injury on October 15 which has sidelined her so far this season.
Junior Katie Rhodes, an elementary education major from Merced, is the fourth Warrior to be honored for her work on the field and in the classroom. In the latter, Rhodes has accrued a GPA of 3.78. On the field, she has contributed four goals and two assists to the Warriors success as a forward.
Westmont will be competing in the NAIA National Championships which will be held in Olathe, Kansas, November 16-22. The Warriors will learn their playing time and first opponent tomorrow when the tournament pairings are released.
