Warriors Fall to Hope International in GSAC Opener
Submitted by: Ron Smith - September 6th, 2006The Westmont volleyball team opened the Golden State Athletic Conference season in Fullerton on Tuesday evening, but suffered a 3-1 set back at Hope International (3-5, 1-0).
Freshman middle blocker Katelyn Lowry helped power the Warriors to a first game win (30-21) by connecting on four of five attacks. Lowry totaled eight kills and posted a .333 attack percentage for the match.
In the second game, senior Kelsey Voetmann led the way for the Warriors with eight kills, but the Royals of Hope International refused to concede and earned a 30-27 win to tie the match at a game each. Game three belonged to Hope International as the Warriors managed just nine kills in a 30-23 loss.
Game four was much closer with the Warriors holding a 28-26 lead. But the Royals finished the Warriors off with a 4-0 run to claim both the game and the match.
Freshman outside hitter Beth Widicus added seven kills to the Warriors’ cause while senior setter Leslie Carroll tallied 31 assists.
Westmont, now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in GSAC play, will travel to Irvine on Saturday night to take on #6 Concordia. The Warriors will host #18 Point Loma Nazarene in their home opener on Friday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m.
