Women’s Tennis Welcomes Mathews, McGurty
June 22nd, 2007Westmont women’s tennis head coach Kathy LeSage has announced the signing of two freshmen recruits for the 2007-08 season - Ilissa Mathews of Coto de Caza and Erin McGurty of Atascadero.
Mathews comes to Westmont from a highly competitive program at Tesoro High School.
“Ilissa is petite in stature, but hits the ball very well,” reported LeSage. “An all-court player, Ilissa is very solid from the baseline. She has quick feet and great thinking capacity. She plays within her strength - not hitting the ball too hard or going for more than she has too. That is a rare quality that I look for in a recruit. If you can come in with a philosophy that you want to develop a point, that is the making of a champion – someone who uses their head, not just their brawn.”
