Junior midfielder Taylor Callan had two assists, including one in the final minute of the game, as Westmont Women’s Soccer (3-3) upended the Regals of California Lutheran
(2-4-1) by a score of 4-0 at Russ Carr Field on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors saw shots from eleven different players and out shot California Lutheran 22-1. Fourteen of Westmont’s shots were on goal.

“I felt like we put some opportunities away with some good finishes,” said head coach Rebecca Mouw. “Taylor’s corner kicks were fantastic today. It really helps when you can be consistent off of those. The team did a better job of combining as a unit, and that was very encouraging for us.”

Westmont’s first goal came in the thirty-fourth minute when senior forward Kayla Crandall smashed the ball into the net off of a cross by freshman midfielder Jenna Nelson. Senior Brianna Russo scored just over three minutes later to put the Warriors up 2-0. Russo took the ball at midfield and dribbled past three defenders to go one-on-one with the keeper. Sophomore Brenna Zimmerman headed the ball into the net with two and one-half minutes left in the first half on a corner kick from Callan.

The only goal of the second half came with just 52 seconds remaining in the game. Callan crossed the ball from the corner, this time finding sophomore Amanda Barret who put the ball in the net for the final goal of the game. The goals for both Zimmerman and Barret were the first of their collegiate careers. All of the goals except Crandall’s were scored by non-starters in today’s contest.

The Warrior goalkeepers, Ashley Werner and Roxanne Love, were untested today as the Regals failed to place a shot on goal. Kristin Borzi who started in goal for California Lutheran recorded six saves. Kelly Balch, who replaced Borzi in goal during the sixty-fourth minute, notched two saves. The Regals also recorded two team saves.

The Warriors begin Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Costa Mesa for a 5:00 p.m. game with #16 Vanguard (5-1-1). Westmont’s next home game is on Wednesday, September 26 at 4:00 p.m. against The Master’s (1-5-1).
