Men’s Soccer Opens GSAC with Win over Vanguard
Submitted by: Ron Smith - September 24th, 2007Senior Johnny Alcaraz and freshman Anthony Strunz provided the Warriors with the firepower needed to claim a 2-1 win in #16 Westmont Men’s Soccer’s Golden State Athletic Conference opener at #20 Vanguard (5-2, 0-1 GSAC) on Saturday.
”We started five freshmen and brought two off the bench,” said head coach Dave Wolf “We went with a younger group today and they came through with three points (one goal, one assist) on the road against a pretty feisty Vanguard team.”
The Warriors first goal came just 11 minutes into the game after Strunz passed the ball to Alcaraz.
“Johnny Alcaraz hit an absolute scream with his left foot from at least 35 yards,” said Wolf. “It seems like he does this stuff at least once a game. The goalkeeper just could not keep it out.”
Tomislav Colic evened the game for the Lions in the twentieth off a free kick that got past Justin Etherton, the Westmont keeper. The score remained tied until Strunz scored the game winner in the sixty-fifth minute.
“Anthony tucked away a goal-mouth scramble,” reported Wolf. “Johnny hit a free kick, that took a kind bounce for us and Anthony was there to tuck in his second goal of the season.”
The Warriors advanced to 5-1 overall with the win and now sport a 1-0 GSAC record. On Tuesday, Westmont will host The Master’s (5-0-3, 1-0) at Russ Carr Field in a 4:00 p.m. game.
