Russo Scores in OT to Give Warriors Win
Submitted by: Ron Smith - October 11th, 2007Brianna Russo scored just 19 seconds into the overtime period to give Westmont Women’s Soccer (7-5, 4-2) a 1-0 victory at Fresno Pacific on Wednesday evening. With the victory, Westmont improves to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
With four GSAC games remaining, the Warriors find themselves tied with California Baptist (9-3, 4-1) for third place with 12 points in the conference standings (three points for a win and one for a tie). #2 Azusa Pacific (9-1-1, 5-0) and #10 Concordia (11-2, 5-1) sit atop the conference with 15 points). #18 Vanguard (7-3-3, 2-2-2) sits in fifth place with eight points.
After playing to a scoreless tie in regulation, the Warriors wasted no time bringing an end to the game so they could get back on the bus and return to Santa Barbara.
“Amy Lawson went in for a 50-50 ball and knocked it to Taylor Callen,” reported head coach Rebecca Mouw regarding the final goal. “Taylor sent it to Russo who was one-on-one with the keeper.
“Overall, I thought we played pretty well,” said Mouw, “though we could have finished our opportunities better. Skyla Lauda played very well at sweeper tonight and Roxanne Love made a great point blank range in the second half.”
The Warriors will host Concordia on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Russ Carr Field.
