Women’s Soccer Battles to Scoreless Tie
Submitted by: Ron Smith - October 15th, 2007Despite a 30-12 shot advantage by the Warriors, Westmont Women’s Soccer and #10 Concordia (11-2-1, 5-1-1) played to a double-overtime scoreless tie on Saturday at Russ Carr Field. Nine different Warriors took shots at the Eagles’ net and 14 of the shots were on goal, but two Eagle keepers combined for 14 saves to keep Westmont (7-5-1, 4-2-1) from scoring.
Westmont freshman goalkeeper Roxanne Love recorded five saves in game to produce her second overtime shutout of the week. On Tuesday, Love shut out Fresno Pacific in Westmont 1-0 win in Fresno.
“I was proud of our team’s effort today,” said head coach Rebecca Mouw. “Defensively, we were sound in our communication and we picked up their runners off the ball. I was very proud of them because that was something we were concerned about coming into this game.
“Offensively, we had our chances,” continued Mouw. “Amy (Lawson) struck the ball very well, especially in the first half. We had a couple of near misses, hitting the crossbar and the post. You could get down when you narrowly miss and stop trying to get forward. But I thought our players did a good job of keeping the momentum with them.
The Warriors outshot the Eagles 23-9 in regulation and 7-3 in the two overtime periods.
“The Biola game on Tuesday will be key for us,” said Mouw. “Nothing gets easier from hear on out. The good news is that we’re fit and ready to play games, but we have to be able to put the ball in the back of the net. That is what it will boil down to in the future.”
Westmont is currently in fourth place in the GSAC with 13 conference points (three points for a win, one point for a tie). #2 Azusa Pacific is on top of the conference with a 6-0 record and 18 points. Concordia has 16 points and a 5-1-1 record. California Baptist is in third place with 15 points and a 5-1 record.
Westmont will host Biola (3-8-2, 1-4-2) at 3:00 p.m. at Russ Carr Field on Tuesday. On Saturday, the Warriors will travel to San Diego Christian (2-9-1, 1-5-0) and then conclude Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday, October 27 with a home game against California Baptist.
