Stumbo, Griego, Meggazi Earn All-GSAC Honors at Championship

Seniors Anna Stumbo and Lisa Griego finished fourth and fifth respectively at the Golden State Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon to lead the Westmont women’s team to a fourth place finish in Costa Mesa. Stumbo, a three-time cross country All-American finished the 5,000 meter course in 18:16, and Griego crossed the finish line one second later. Both earned All-GSAC honors.

Rounding out the scoring for the women were freshman Katie Fritzke (19:12) who placed nineteenth, sophomore Christa Juell (19:37) who claimed twenty-seventh place and junior Kaitlyn Dunn (19:43) who was thirty-first.

Azusa Pacific claimed the women’s championship with 57 points followed by Biola and Point Loma Nazarene who each scored 66 points. Biola was awarded second placed based on a faster finish of the sixth runner for each team. Westmont tallied 83 points while Fresno Pacific, in fifth, scored 108 points to barely edge out Concordia who scored 109. Vanguard took seventh with 213 points and The Master’s rounded out the field with 248 points.

The men’s team finished in fifth place with All-American Aaron Megazzi posting the Warriors best time (25:44) in the 8,000 meter race. Megazzi, a senior, also earned All-GSAC recognition. Senior Robby Cherry crossed the finish line in twenty-first place in a time of 26:24. Nick Martin (26:29), also a senior, was third for the Warriors in twenty-third place. Freshman Jacob Goodin (26:39) and sophomore Sean Adams (26:40) rounded out Westmont’s top five in twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth places respectively.

Concordia’s men edged out Azusa Pacific for the conference title by scoring 77 points to Azusa’s 78. Vanguard claimed third place with 95 points and The Master’s finished fourth with 100. Westmont’s 107 points was seven better the fifth place Biola. Fresno Pacific scored 120 points while Point Loma Nazarene settled for 197 points.

Westmont’s men’s and women’s teams will take seven runners each to compete in the NAIA Region II Championship next Saturday in Fresno. At steak is an opportunity to qualify for the National Championships which will be held in Kenosha, Wisconsin on November 17.
