Freshman midfielder Brooke Johnson picked a very good time for her first collegiate goal - 19 seconds into overtime against San Diego Christian (4-8-1, 1-7-0). The golden goal gave #24 Westmont it’s sixth conference win and keeps the squad in a tie with #9 Concordia for second place in the Golden State Athletic Conference. California Baptist also won on Saturday, defeating The Master’s by a score of 4-1.

“It was a very sweet header,” said head coach Rebecca Mouw. “Candace Marques sent the ball from the right sideline to about the penalty spot and Brooke headed it in. Candace had a superb game tonight both offensively and defensively. She has stepped up her leadership abilities as a communicator which is remarkable for a freshman.”

The Warriors found themselves down 1-0 when the Hawks’ Shannon Gibson scored in the thirty-ninth minute off an assists from Mary Willis. It would be another 40 minutes before the Warriors could record the equalizer which was accomplished unassisted by junior Taylor Callan.

“Taylor took a couple of dribbles and then launched a shot from 35 yards out,” reported Mouw.

The Warriors and Hawks each tallied nine shots including five shots-on-goal apiece. Westmont held a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Roxanne Love had four saves.

“Tonight, we started seven freshman, two seniors, one junior and one sophomore in the overtime period,” reported Mouw. “Two of our seniors were injured and had to leave the game in the first half. Lindsey Malone was hurt about 20 minutes in and Andria Carlson was injured about ten minutes later. We will have to wait and see if the will be able to play.”

Also injured and unavailable for tonight’s game were senior Heather Brown and junior Amy Lawson.

Westmont will conclude the regular season by hosting #13 California Baptist (11-5-0, 6-2-0) next Saturday at Russ Carr Field as part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader. The men will kick off at noon and the women at 2:00 p.m. The Lancers are currently one point behind the Warriors in the GSAC standings so the game should have significant implications for seeding in the upcoming NAIA Region II Tournament.
