Women’s Soccer Ties Lancers, Plays Azusa in First Round of Regionals
Submitted by: Ron Smith - October 28th, 2007After playing to a 1-1 double overtime tie with #17 California Baptist on Saturday at Russ Carr Field, the Warriors learned today that they will face #2 Azusa Pacific on Wednesday in the first round of the NAIA Region II Playoffs. Despite finishing third place the Golden State Athletic Conference, the Warriors were seeded at number eight in the post-season tournament due to their a system for ranking soccer teams now as Longo.
On Saturday, Westmont (9-6-2, 6-2-2) scored first against California Baptist (12-4-1, 7-2-1) when senior Heather Brown headed in a cross from junior Taylor Callan in the eighteenth minute. Brown’s goal came on the first on nine corner kick opportunities for the Warriors.
In the seventy-sixth minute, Raechel Carr nearly gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead by heading the ball into the net. But a foul was called negating the goal. One minute later, Jacquelyn Witz scored for the Lancers, resulting in the 1-1 tie. Both teams had solid opportunities to score in the overtime periods with the Lancers taking five shots and the Warriors taking four.
Overall, California Baptist out shot Westmont 21-13. Westmont senior goalkeeper Ashley Werner made four saves in the first hand before turning the net over to freshman Roxanne Love. Love recorded eight saves in the second half and two overtime periods.
The Warriors will play at Azusa Pacific (14-1-1, 10-0) on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Also playing in first-round action on Wednesday will be seventh-seeded Vanguard at second-seeded California Baptist, sixth-seeded Cal State San Marcos at third-seeded Concordia, and fifth-seeded Point Loma Nazarene at fourth-seeded Menlo. The Region II semifinals are set for Friday, November 2 with the finals to be played on Tuesday, November 6.
