Westmont women’s soccer season came to an end on Wednesday as the Warriors suffered a 5-1 loss at #2 Azusa Pacific (15-1-1). The Warriors were out shot 29-5 in the contest and freshman goalkeeper Roxanne Love posted a new single game record with 13 saves.

“Azusa is obviously a very good team who has been successful all year,” said head coach Rebecca Mouw. “We gave up the first goal just before half which was a momentum downer for us. We came out and took more risks in the second half and we paid for it. I’m proud of how the players kept battling even though we were down 4-0. They were still battling and trying to get something for us and ended up with a goal.”

Azusa Pacific’s Sarah Yoro scored in the forty-second minute to produce a 1-0 lead for the Cougars at half time. In the fifty-fourth minute Theresa Broad scored and then scored again the fifty-ninth minute to give Azusa Pacific a 3-0 lead. In the seventieth minute, Yoro struck again for her second goal of the day.

Westmont’s goal came in the eighty-fourth minute off the foot of sophomore midfielder Amanda Barret. Barret intercepted an attempt to clear the ball from in front of the Cougar goal and converted on her attempt from18 yards out.

Azusa’s Sara Orenthal added the Cougar’s final goal in the eighty-ninth minute.

“I’m so proud of our seniors,” said Mouw. “They have done a tremendous job over their four years at Westmont and we are really going to miss them.”

Reflecting on the season, Mouw continued, “Our highlight has to be finishing third in the Golden State Athletic Conference after a bit of a slow start and all those overtime games. But more importantly, the team chemistry has been awesome this year. If you look on the field right now, you see a lot of tears. This is a very close team who has had a wonderful year together.”
