Spartans Conquer Warriors

Westmont Women’s Tennis (5-3) played host to San Jose State (2-2) on Friday at the Abbott Tennis Courts. Despite a 9-0 score in favor of the Spartans, the Warriors put up a good fight against the NCAA Division I program.

In doubles action, the Spartans’ Amber Silverstone and Ashley Tavita claimed an 8-2 win on the number one court over freshmen Lauren Combs and Erin McGurty. Westmont senior Jennie Dunn and freshman Ilissa Mathews teamed up at number two doubles, taking Silvana Dukic and Dana Popescu to an 8-5 score. The closest doubles match was at number three where San Jose’s Gabriella Filipcik and Anna Guzman defeated juniors Kristen Lee and Christina Klein by a score of 8-6.

Ware Scores Career High 21 Points in Loss

Senior point guard Josh Ware produced a career high 21 points but Westmont Men’s Basketball (13-13, 7-11) couldn’t pull off an upset of #6 Concordia (14-4, 15-4) in Irvine on Thursday night. The Warriors lost 91-81 despite shooting 51.8% from the floor and out-rebounding the Eagles 38-31.

Westmont’s challenge was in holding on to the ball. The Warriors committed 26 turnovers and the Eagles made the most of it by recording 31 points off those turnovers. By comparison, Concordia committed 14 turnovers which Westmont turned into 13 points.

Women’s Basketball Victorious at Concordia

The defense came through again for #21 Westmont Women’s Basketball (19-11, 11-7) as the Warriors defeated the Eagles of Concordia in Irvine by a score of 54-51. Westmont has allowed their opponents fewer points per game (58.9) than any other team in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

But the win did not come easily for the Warriors who struggled from the floor, making only 37.5% (21 of 56) of their shots including one of nine from beyond the arc. Sophomore post Alisha Heglund led the offensive effort with 14 points. She also recorded four rebounds. Sophomore guard Jessica Case added 13 points and three boards. Sophomore point guard Amber Steven scored 10 points while contributing seven assists and four rebounds.

Men’s Tennis Rallies but Falls Short against Broncos

After suffering a sweep in doubles, Westmont Men’s Tennis (3-7) split the singles matches with the Cal Poly Pomona (3-2) resulting in a 3-6 non-conference loss to the Broncos.

The Warriors wins came on courts two, three and four. At number two, Aaron Cooke defeated Salvador Romero 6-3, 6-1 while Kent Stormans won on court three by the same score over Mike Palacio. On the number four court, junior Ryan Shultz claimed a 6-1 win in the first set and then squeaked by Joe Madoo 7-6 in the second set, winning the tiebreaker 7-2.

Five Run Fourth Leads to Warrior Win

Junior shortstop Robert De Leon delivered a double and a homerun to help power Westmont Baseball (3-7, 3-6) to a Golden State Athletic Conference win over The Master’s (12-3, 5-3) on Wednesday in Santa Clarita. The Warriors put up two runs in the first and five in the fourth to give starter Erik Gaustad his first win of the year (1-0). Westmont produced 11 hits in the nine inning game while playing errorless ball.

De Leon got things rolling for Westmont in the top of the first inning when he was hit by a pitch with two outs. Junior first baseman Mark Boujikian moved De Leon over to second on a single through the left side. Westmont loaded the bases when junior right fielder Taylor Grace reached on an error by the Mustang’s third baseman. Freshman centerfielder Taylor Maddox stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single into left to put Westmont up 2-0.

Men’s Tennis Sweeps Biola

Westmont Men’s Tennis (3-5, 1-2) picked up its first Golden State Athletic Conference win on Tuesday by sweeping the Eagles of Biola (0-6, 0-3) by a score of 9-0 at the Abbott Tennis Courts.

Senior team captain Kyle Godfrey cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number one singles, defeating Biola’s Colin Snow. Freshman Aaron Cooke claimed the win at number two with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Tyler Jung while fellow freshman Kent Stormans won on the number three court by the same score over Justin Mart.

Women’s Tennis Grounds Eagles

On a beautiful afternoon at Westmont’s Abbott Tennis Courts, the number 25 ranked Warriors (5-2, 1-2) picked up an 8-1 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Eagles of Biola (0-6, 0-4).

Westmont swept the doubles matches with freshman Illisa Mathews and senior Jennie Dunn defeating Christine Garner and Nicholle Johnston at number one by a score of 8-2. Freshmen Lauren Combs and Erin McGurty teamed up for the first time and earned an 8-2 win at number two over the Eagle’s Marisa Flores and Sarah Snyder. Juniors Kristen Lee and Christina Klein completed the Warrior’s doubles sweep, winning on court number three by an 8-3 count over Kristen Williams and Kelli Shiroma.

#2 Azusa Pacific Defeats Men’s Tennis

February 25th, 2008

Westmont senior Ryan Shultz was the lone winner for the Warriors in Saturday’s 8-1 loss to #2 Azusa Pacific (7-1, 3-0) at the Abbott Tennis Courts. Shultz, who has recently returned to the Warrior lineup after suffering an injury, defeated Eric Isaacson in the number six singles match. After losing the first set 6-2, Shultz rallied to win the second set by the same score. A super-tiebreaker was conducted to determine the match winner with Shultz prevailing 10-7.

Senior Kyle Godfrey came close to winning a second team point for the Warriors in his number one singles match with Matthijs Bolsius. Godfrey lost the first set 6-3 and then came back to take the second set 7-6. However, Bolsius won the super-tiebreaker 10-3.
