Taylor MadoxWestmont center fielder Taylor Maddox of Santa Clarita has been named the Golden State Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week after going nine for 12 at the plate last week and driving in 11 runs.

Maddox helped lead the Warriors to a 4-0 record starting with a 10-6 victory over Biola in La Mirada. The sophomore went three for four and drove in six runs against the Eagles.

In Saturday’s doubleheader against Concordia, Maddox had five hits in seven at bats and added another four RBIs.

“We dropped Taylor down in the order a little bit so that he might see some better pitches to hit,” said Westmont Head Coach Scott Deck. “He has been working very hard and has kept a positive attitude even when he was frustrated with his hitting. His hard work has paid off. He got a lot of clutch, two-out hits for us – something we have struggled with this year.”

After struggling in the first half of the season, the Warriors have now won six of their last seven games and are looking to challenge for a post-season opportunity. Westmont (9-21, 6-14 GSAC) is currently three and one-half games out of sixth place which represents the level to which they must rise to be included in the GSAC Tournament at season’s end.

“We’re happy for Taylor, but we also look at it as a team award,” said Deck. “The award validates our team’s efforts and the work they have been putting in. To get a weekly conference honor shows that we are starting to earn respect from other teams and from those who are watching GSAC Baseball.

“The reason Taylor is getting those RBIs is because his teammates are on base and putting him in a position to drive in the runs,” continued Deck. “Baseball is a team sport but individuals still have to come through and perform. Hitting is an individual aspect of the game and Taylor came through with huge hits against Biola and Concordia.”

Maddox and the rest of the Warriors will host #24 Fresno Pacific (18-9, 12-8 GSAC) on Wednesday at Russ Carr Field in a two o’clock game before driving to Fresno for a five o’clock game on Thursday against the same team. On Saturday, Westmont will host California Baptist (17-14, 8-12 GSAC) in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
