Turkey has improved to 2-0 in women’s basketball at the 2012 London Olympics with a 61-57 win over the Czech Republic. Westmont’s Tugce Canitez saw limited action in the game, playing for just one minute late in the second quarter.

Turkey held a 33-21 lead at halftime and increased its advantage to 37-24 after the intermission. However, the Czechs used a 13-3 run to close to within three points (40-37) with three and one-half minutes remaining in the third quarter. That proved to be is as close as the Czech Republic would get.

The Turkish team regained a ten point advantage (57-47) with ten minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and withstood another charge from the Czechs to claim the four-point victory.

If the United States defeats Angola later today, Turkey, China and the U.S. will sit atop the Group A standings with 2-0 records and four points each (two points for a win, one for a loss).

Four of the six teams from Group A will advance to the quarterfinals which begin on Tuesday, August 7. Today’s win gives Turkey an inside track in the race to secure a quarterfinal berth.

Turkey and the United States will match-up on August 1 at 2:15 p.m. PDT. Wednesday’s game is scheduled to be shown on NBC Sports Network and the NBC Universal Olympic Basketball Channel.

Turkey will play China at 8:45 a.m. on Friday and then conclude Group A play with a game against Croatia at noon on Sunday. Both games are to be aired on the NBC Universal Olympic Basketball Channel.
