Westmont Women’s Volleyball earned their sixth win of the season without a loss as the Warriors posted a three game sweep (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) of Cornerstone (Mich.). Junior outside hitter Madison Serrano led the team with 13 kills and posted an attack percentage of .458.

Marie Trudelle, Ciara Turner and Sydney Striff combined for another 20 kills without any of them committing and attack error. Trudelle went 8 for 18 (.444), Turner 7 for 18 (.389) and Striff 5 for 10 (.500). As a team, the Warriors posted a .317 attack percentage.

Cornerstone (2-3) was led by Callie Johnson with 11 kills (.360 attack percentage) and Megan Newhouse with 10 kills (.318 attack percentage).

In the first set, Westmont jumped out to a 10-4 lead with half of the Warriors’ points coming off of Golden Eagle errors. Cornerstone was able to pull to within three points at 17-14, but would get no closer.

The second set belonged to the Warriors who went up 15-6 to take control. Collectively, the Warriors hit .412 in the second frame, tallying 16 kills against just two attack errors.

The third set was a much closer affair. Westmont went up 6-3 early on, but Cornerstone caught the Warriors at seven-all. At 20-all, Newhouse and Johnson produced back-to-back kills to give the Golden Eagles a two-point advantage.

Turner turned the tide for the Warriors with a kill and then combined with Heidi Thompson on a block to even the score at 22. A bad set and an attack error by Cornerstone gave the Warriors match point at 24-22.

Newhouse delivered another kill to keep the Golden Eagles’ hopes alive, but Turner put the game away with the final kill of the afternoon, sending Warrior fans home happy.

Friday and Saturday, Westmont will compete at the ASICS/Wyndham Labor Day Tournament in Irvine at Concordia. The Warriors will take on Westminster (Utah) on Friday at five o’clock. On Saturday, Westmont will face-off with Carroll (Mont.) at eleven o’clock and William Jessup at three.
