Davis and Cedillo Headed to Finals

Westmont sophomores Jessica Cedillo and Grace Davis will compete for the ITA NAIA Women’s Tennis Regional Championship on Saturday at three o’clock in La Mirada. Cedillo and Davis will take on Rye Hewett-Steiger and Florencia Martina from Lewis-Clark State (Idaho).

Cedillo and Davis earned the spot in the finals with an 8-1 semifinals win over the Hope International duo of Sabrina Miller and Corinna Ramos. In the quarterfinals, Cedillo and Davis defeated Ellie Johnson and Caitlyn Uzzi from Concordia by a score of 8-3.

Also playing in the doubles tournament were Fernanda Rivera and Kate Stratman. After a first round bye, Rivera and Stratman lost 8-4 to Ulrike Hahn and Mona Piller of Concordia in the quarterfinals.

Overall, they played really well,” said head coach Kendyll McManigal of her team’s first outing this year. “Grace won the first set against the number one seed and Haley (Strandness) served for the set against the number five seed. They are all fired-up for the season.”

In singles action, Cedillo entered as the number two seed and was awarded a first round bye. Cedillo defeated Sarah Edwards of Arizona Christian 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Matched up against sixth-seeded Rye Hewett-Steiger, Cedillo fell 6-1, 6-3.

Strandness earned a first round victory over Julia Anaya from Arizona Christian by scores 6-0, 6-1. Strandness advanced to the second round when her opponent, Caroline Houston of Hope International, withdrew because of injury. In the quarterfinals, Strandness lost to Piller 7-6, 6-0.

Davis, who started singles play in the second round after receiving a first round bye, defeated Jessica Trink of Arizona Christian 6-2, 6-1 to gain a berth in the quarterfinals. Matched up with top-seeded Kathryn Ashford of Biola, Davis lost in the quarterfinals 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Rivera claimed a first round 6-2, 6-4 win over Hope International’s Alyssa Pritchett before losing to Ashford in the second round be scores of 6-1, 6-0.

Stratman also posted a first round victory, defeating Miller of Hope International 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, Stratman lost 6-3, 6-2 to Johnson.
