Goranso, Schaefer Advance to Semifinals at Regionals – Schaefer and Barnard to Play in Doubles Championship

Westmont’s Tim Goranson, the top seed at the ITA NAIA Men’s Tennis Regional Championships, and Rodrigo Schaefer, the number two seed, have advanced to Saturday morning’s semifinals. Goranson will match-up with Concordia’s Christian Wickenhauser who was the fourth seed in the field of 27. Schaefer will take on Andrew Barnett of Arizona Christian.

In the doubles bracket, Schaefer and Joshua Barnard earned a spot in tomorrow’s championship match. The Westmont doubles pair will take on Barnett and Ian Glessing of Arizona Christian at three o’clock.

Goranson started singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Biola’s Gregory Cobian, then defeated Michael Munguia in the quarterfinals by scores of 6-0, 6-1.

Four other Warriors also competed in singles play. Barnard posted a 6-2, 6-2 win in the opening round over Jan Guler of Concordia, then took out Glessing in the second round 6-3, 6-0. Barnard fell to Wickhauser in the quarterfinals by scores of 7-5, 6-2.

John Bertram received a first round bye and then defeated Lucas Lee of Biola 7-5, 6-1 in the second round. Bertram matched up with Barnett in the quarterfinals and lost by scores of 6-4, 7-6.

Schaefer was the second seed in the tournament and also received a first round bye. In the second round he defeated Farren Casad of Concordia 7-5, 6-3. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Alberto Sanz-Fernandez of Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) 6-4, 7-6.

Also competing for the Warriors was Travis Kimsey who posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in the first round over Adam West of Arizona Christian. Kimsey advanced to the second round where he lost to Sanz-Fernandez 7-5, 6-1.

Barnard and Schaefer earned their spot in the doubles championship by defeating Guler and Wickenhauser 8-2 in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Barnard and Schaefer posted an 8-2 win over Tyler Cawthorne and Munguia or Arizona Christian.

Bertram and Goranson entered as the number one seed in the doubles bracket but lost 9-8 in the quarterfinals to Lee and Tayven Townsend of Biola.
