(AZUSA, Calif.) Westmont Women’s Tennis, ranked at #12 in the NAIA, travelled south Wednesday to take on the Cougars of former Golden State Athletic Conference rival #16 (NCAA Division II) Azusa Pacific (7-1).

Even though the Warriors (5-4, 4-0 GSAC) ended up dropping the match 8-1, the contest was much more competitive than the final results indicate. Addtionally, the event lasted four hours before all racquets were laid to rest.

The Cougars swept doubles, but the sisters Stratman – sophomore Lauren and freshman Kate – held an early advantage in the number one slot before falling 8-4. Sophomores Jessica Cedillo and Haley Strandness also lost a tight match, succumbing 8-5 at number two doubles.

In singles, the elder Stratman claimed the only Westmont victory of the day, defeating #25 (NCAA II) Emily Harris 6-4, 6-4. With the win, Stratman improved to 7-1 on the season.

“Lauren played extremely well and beat an experienced senior,” commented Westmont head coach Kendyll McManigal. “She received zero free points and competed to win.”

Coincidentally, at number four, five, and six singles respectively, sophomore Grace Davis, and juniors Emily Keach and Alyson Meyer each earned first-set victories. However, all three women wavered in their second sets, and wound up the victims of super-tiebreakers losses in their third.

“Losing three super-tiebreakers is both a positive and frustrating,” remarked McManigal. “We would have definitely liked to have pulled those out, but I know we will soon. We also need to spend some additional time in practice with doubles to gain more confidence amongst our tandems; nonetheless, today served as great preparation for our upcoming duel against Vanguard.”

The Warriors are slated to return to action at 1 o’clock on Saturday against the ninth-ranked Lions (4-3, 4-0). However, Santa Barbara forecasts a 100 percent chance of rain this weekend, which may force the teams to reschedule.
