(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Golden State Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis conjured a contest for the ages this afternoon, as fifth-ranked Westmont (8-4, 4-1 GSAC) and fourth-ranked Vanguard dueled it out in Santa Barbara.

The two teams combined to provide a competition of epic proportions that rivaled even the most thrilling sporting tales of ancient Greece. Lasting 5 hours and 17 minutes, the marathon match even supplied a cathartic, tragic ending, as the Warriors fell 5-4 to the Lions at the culmination of doubles play.

Vanguard vigorously mounted a 2-0 advantage in singles, winning assertively in the number five and six slots. Neverthless, Westmont’s (#35)* John Bertram cut the Warriors’ deficit to one with a decisive victory of his own at court three.

Westmont would go on to lose at number one and number four, creating a 4-1 hole for Mark Basham’s squad. Then, the waiting game began.

Fans and team members alike watched in awe as Westmont’s (#13) Tim Goranson spent 3 hours and 45 minutes battling Vanguard’s (#7) Roger Muri on the number two court. The Warrior served for the initial set at 5-4, but the Lion rallied, winning 7-6 (4).

Goranson, determined to prevail, powered his way through the second set, taking it 6-3. However, the competition’s final set proved to be even longer than the first.

In a back and forth affair, the native of Sweden inched his way to victory. Even though Muri served for match point three times, Goranson broke each attempt. Additionally, the third set featured seven deuces in route to the seventh and final point alone.

The clutch triumph by the senior gave the Warriors rejuvenated hope and life. Down 4-2, Westmont now needed to sweep doubles play to steal the overall victory.

A swift defeat of the Lions at number two doubles by the combination of (#15) John Bertram and Goranson to put the score at 4-3 (Vanguard) made the feat look even more promising.

“I was very proud of John for the way he played in both singles and doubles,” exclaimed Basham. “Obviously, Tim’s match was epic in terms of length, but also for guts as well. Really, both of those guys fought extremely hard today.”

At one point, all three of the Warriors’ doubles matches foretold victory. Nonetheless, Westmont went on to fall at the number three slot to end all hopes of a comeback.

The (second-ranked) dynamic duo of Rodrigo Schaefer and Josh Barnard did outdo their opponents at number one singles, extending their season record to 8-2.

With the loss, the Westmont men have now dropped four straight to Vanguard, with their last victory coming on March 27, 2012.

Westmont now waits and plots for a rematch with the Lions this Saturday in Costa Mesa. That match will take place at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center, starting at noon.

“Largely, it was a very good team match, and I was super stoked with the overall energy in doubles,” affirmed Basham. “For a moment there, I thought we were going to secure the needed sweep. Our number three team played well, but they just couldn’t sustain it.

“We’ll need to find more production at some positions in singles, but I think we definitely have a fighter’s chance,” continued the veteran coach. “I really do believe that we can play well enough to go into their home court and take it back.”
