(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Following a Westmont Men’s Tennis match that lasted for 5 hours and 17 minutes, two undefeated Golden State Athletic Conference squads, the #12 Warriors and ninth-ranked Vanguard, clashed at the Lynn Abbott Tennis Courts in Santa Barbara for a vital league match-up.

However, it was the Lions (7-7, 5-0 GSAC) who remained unbeaten Monday afternoon, winning 5-3 and breaking the two-way tie at the top of the standings as the Warriors (6-8, 4-1) wavered in singles play after acquiring a 2-1 advantage upon the completion of doubles competition.

Leading off the day, third-ranked Lauren and Kate Stratman served up another doubles victory, striking down Vanguard’s seventh-ranked pair on the number one court. The Stratman sisters now sit at 7-5 on the season.

In upset fashion, sophomores Jessica Cedillo and Haley Strandness procured a win over the Lions’ number two team, ranked #12 in the nation, at number two doubles.

Sixth-ranked Lauren Stratman was the only Warrior to collect a triumphant result throughout individual play. The battle-tested sophomore easily bested #12 Juliet Labarthe in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

Grace Davis’ match, on the fifth court, was adjourned in the third set due to darkness, as the contest’s victor had already been decided.

Westmont takes on sixth-ranked (NCAA DIII) Middlebury (Vt.) (4-2) on Wednesday at two o’clock in Santa Barbara. The team then travels to Costa Mesa Saturday for a stirring rematch with the Lions.

“Our girls came out fired up today, and it showed during doubles,” admired Westmont head coach Kendyll McManigal. “Winning two doubles matches against a team like Vanguard is impressive. That has been an area that we have struggled in thus far this season.

“Vanguard is a tremendously talented, experienced, and deep team – and they responded,” continued the coach. “The good part is that we play them again on Saturday, but I was how we played today.”
