(COSTA MESA, Calif.) Three days after a heart-breaking 5-4 defeat to the Golden State Athletic Conference’s top team, the Lions of ninth-ranked Vanguard (10-7, 7-0 GSAC), #11 Westmont Women’s Tennis (7-10, 5-2) once again traveled south to take the court at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Pursuing their first victory since March 20, the Warriors much desired a positive result. Although revenge was left unserved versus the Lions Saturday, this day would be different.

Tuesday’s competition against the #13 Eagles of Concordia (6-8, 5-3) proved to be just what Kendyll McManigal’s women were in search of. When all matches were accounted for, the Warriors had blazed past the Eagles 8-1, exceeding their 6-3 victory against CIU at home on February 15.

“We absolutely attained a huge bounce-back win today,” described McManigal. “All of our challenging matches have prepared us to succeed in conference, and that preparation really paid dividends today. We played much better against Concordia today than we did when we faced off in February.”

In individual play, a trio of Warrior sophomores, (six-ranked*) Lauren Stratman, Haley Strandness, and Grace Davis, made quick work of their opponents at number one, three, and five singles respectively.

Conversely, (#45) Kate Stratman at number two, as well as Jessica Cedillo at number four, prevailed in matches that tested each player’s resolve. Stratman was triumphant in straight sets after squeaking out her first frame, while Cedillo utilized an extremely tight super-tiebreaker to defeat her opponent in three sets.

A forfeit by the Eagles at number six sealed the deal on a Westmont singles sweep.

During doubles play, the (third-ranked) Stratman sisters (9-6) overcame their opponents at number one, extending their winning streak. The Warriors took number three doubles as well – via another forfeit by Concordia.

Westmont’s only lost point on the day came at number two doubles.

With only three conference bouts remaining, Westmont trails Vanguard by two matches. However, following the rout of CUI, the Warriors now hold a 1.5 match advantage over the Eagles – the conference’s third-place squad.

Furthermore, Westmont’s final three league opponents (Arizona Christian, Hope International, and Biola) possess a combined record of 17-35 (4-16).

The Warriors are set to host ACU this Saturday at two o’clock.
