Track and Field Ready for Nationals

Outdoor Track & FieldWestmont will be represented by 19 athletes competing in 10 events this week at the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The championship begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday.

Three athletes will compete in multi-events beginning on Thursday. Becky Collier and Kristan Holding will both compete in the pentathlon. Collier’s mark of 4,824 points set at the Sam Adams Multi-Event Invitational is the second best mark in the NAIA this year. Holding set the NAIA’s 14th best mark at the same event with 4,338 points. Both athletes earned All-American honors in the pentathlon at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in March.

Ben McCollum will compete in the decathlon which also begins on Thursday. He posted the 11th best mark in the NAIA this season, tallying 6,110 points at the Claremont Classic.

Field competitors include Shane Rowan in the triple jump and Collier in the high jump. Shane produced All-American performances in the triple jump in both the indoor and outdoor championships in 2012 and is the school record holder in the event at 14.98 meters (49-1.75). Collier was named an All-American in the high jump in the March 2014 indoor championships and is the school record holder at a height of 1.78 meters (5-10).

Daniel Erickson and Heidi Nicholls will be competing in the marathon on Saturday morning, which begins at 6:00 a.m. CDT. Erickson qualified for the 26 mile, 385 yard event by completing a half-marathon with a qualifying time of 1:11:40. Nicholls ran a half-marathon time of 1:27:08 to earn her spot in the classic race.

Elysia Hodges will compete in the 400 meter dash after recording the third fastest time in the NAIA this year of 54.85. She is the Warrior record holder in the event, having posted a time of 53.77 at last year’s national championship when she finished as the national runner-up.

Three relay teams have also qualified for the national championships. Tyler Moore, Bryan Avendano, John Nealon and Christian Hatchett will compete in the 4 x 400 meters. The quartet set the Westmont record in the relay event with a time of 3:14.23 in early April. Competing in the 4 x 800 meters relay is Evan Kramer, David Donner, Nathan Evans and Evan Bradford.

The women’s 4 x 400 meter relay team consists of Karlie Storkson, Ceci Adams, Lorien Patmore and Kaylin Koopmans. The Warriors earned an automatic qualification time when they completed the four-lap race in a time of 3:54.90 at the Occidental Invitational just one and one-half weeks ago.
