Double Honors for Gildea

After posting a .609 batting average (14 of 23) during last weeks’ Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament, Westmont catcher Brandon Gildea has been named both the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Male Athlete of the Week and the Golden State Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week.

Gildea’s 14 hits included three doubles. He also tallied five RBIs, one sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt. Defensively, Gildea caught 43 of 45 innings.

On the season, Gildea has a .393 batting average and leads the Warriors with 83 hits including 12 doubles, two triples and five home runs. He also has 35 RBIs and a .540 slugging percentage. Last week, Gildea was named to the 2014 All-GSAC Baseball Team.

The 24th-ranked Warriors (38-17) won the GSAC Tournament last week by taking four of five games. After dropping the first game to top-seeded and seventh-ranked San Diego Christian, Westmont won four games in a row to claim the championship, including the last two against the Hawks.

Warriors Win GSAC Tournament, Earn Nationals’ Automatic Berth

Westmont Baseball (38-17) took two games from #7 San Diego Christian (39-18) to win the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday and earn an automatic berth into the NAIA National Championship.

After losing the first game on Thursday to San Diego Christian, Westmont won four games in a row and eliminated all three other teams from the tournament. In two games today, Westmont scored 30 runs and had 41 hits.

In the early game, Westmont staved off elimination by defeating the Hawks 17-11. Hunter Christenson picked-up the win in relief, improving his season record to 3-2. Christenson, who took the mound in the sixth inning, gave up three runs, only one of which was earned. Christenson allowed three hits.

Warriors Trounce Lions in GSAC Tournament

Scoring early and often, Westmont Baseball (36-17) has advanced to Championship Saturday with a 17-7 pounding of Vanguard (32-21) at the GSAC Baseball Tournament in El Cajon. The Warriors scored in each of the first five innings, taking a 15-2 lead.

Tomorrow, the Warriors will take on San Diego Christian in the double-elimination tournament beginning at noon. If the Warriors prevail, they will need to defeat San Diego Christian in a second game tomorrow to claim the tournament championship. Since the Hawks have not yet lost, they need win just one game tomorrow.

In Friday’s victory, Will Barring cleared the yard in each of his first two at-bats and produced a two-RBI double in his third at-bat to drive in four runs and score three times. Brandon Gildea was four for four at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Warriors Advance in GSAC Tournament

After dropping its opening game in the GSAC Baseball Tournament to top-seeded and seventh ranked San Diego Christian (38-16) by a score of 6-2, Westmont Baseball (35-17) rallied with a 6-3 win over second-seeded and 12th ranked The Master’s (37-16) in an elimination game.

Westmont will resume play on Friday at 3:00 p.m. in another elimination game against the loser of tomorrow’s game between San Diego Christian and third-seed and 22nd ranked Vanguard (32-19).

The Warriors’ win is the 35 of the season which establishes a new program record for most wins in a single season. The previous record of 34 was established in 1989 when the Warriors were 34-16 under John Kirkgard.

Torin Shaikh took the loss in the Warriors’ first game (the second game of the tournament), giving up five runs on nine hits in six innings.
