Westmont Men’s Tennis swept the ITA NAIA Small College West Regionals in the first tennis event of the 2014-15 season. Joshua Barnard and Carl-Philip Lindqvist won the doubles competition while Luke Whalen captured the singles title for the Warriors.

By winning, all three Warriors have earned a spot in the ITA NAIA Small College National Tournament, which will be held October 9-12 in Sumter, South Carolina.

Whalen opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 first round win over Bernardo Bertolucci of Concordia before sweeping Thiago Duarte de Brito of Hope International 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Whalen faced Concordia’s Christian Wickenhausen, the top seed of the singles tournament. After winning the first set 6-3, Whalen claimed the second set 7-5 to reach the semifinals.

Whalen was not the only Warrior to reach the semifinals. In fact, three of the four semifinal competitors were from Westmont. Barnard, who was the number two seed, reached the semis after defeating Hayden Hensley of Concordia 6-1, 6-4. Lindqvist earned his semifinal place by defeating Man Ho Ko, also of Concordia 6-2, 6-3.

In the first semifinal Barnard defeated Rafael Racy of Concordia to earn a place in the championship game. In the second semifinal, Whalen defeated Lindqvist, his Westmont teammate, 6-4, 6-3. In the all-Westmont final, Whalen claimed the championship with a score of 6-4, 6-3 over Barnard.

As the number two seed in the doubles tournament, Barnard and Lindqvist enjoyed a first round bye before defeating Ko and Mortiz Pronath of Concordia 8-6 in the quarterfinals. The Westmont pair advanced to the championship match with an 8-2 win over Tyler Cawthrone and Santiago Galeffi of Arizona Christian.

Whalen and partner Travis Kimsey also reached the semifinals after defeating Westmont teammates Christian Mathis and Tommy Nightingale 9-7 in the quarterfinals. However, Whalen and Kimsey fell by the same score in the semifinals to Racy and Bertolucci.
