Westmont Women’s Soccer (16-3), the fourth ranked team in the NAIA and the seventh seed in the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship, has advanced to the second round of the tournament with a 5-0 win over the Braves of Ottawa (Kan.)

The Warriors dominated time of possession and took 30 shots to Braves’ seven while putting 18 of their attempts on goal. Westmont sophomore midfielder Brooke Lillywhite participated in all five goals, scoring two and garnering three assists.

The first goal came in the just the fourth minute of play. Lillywhite forwarded a ball past two defenders as senior forward Kaci Mexico broke for the goal. Mexico dribbled left and then fired from eight yards out into the upper back netting.

In the 29th minute, sophomore defender Grace Lemley crossed a ball from the left sideline to Lillywhite in the center of the field. Lillywhite flicked it on to junior forward Kelsey Steck who scored from five yards out to make the score 2-0.

The third goal was scored in the 48th minute. Freshman midfielder Destinee Adams headed a ball forward to Lillywhite who beat two defenders and then passed the ball to Mexico on the right side. Mexico fired past a diving keeper and found the side netting for the goal.

In the 55th minute, Lillywhite settled a ball that had been headed by senior forward Mallory Mitchell and then passed it forward to Mexico. Mexico’s shot was bounded off the keeper, but when a defender attempted to clear the ball, it hit Mexico in the leg and bounced in front of the goal. Lillywhite collected the ball and scored from three yards out.

The final goal came in the 70th minute of play off of a free kick. Lemley was taken down hard just three yards above the left corner of the 18-yard box. After Ottawa’s Kayla Saucedo was issued a yellow card for the infraction, Lillywhite took the free kick and lobbed it just below the crossbar. The keeper got an arm on the ball, but could not prevent it from resulting in the Warriors’ fifth score.

Westmont will now travel to Orange Beach, Alabama to continue tournament play. On Tuesday, December 2, Westmont will face off against #13 Martin Methodist (13-5-1). The game will be played exactly one year to the day after the Warriors defeated the Red Hawks 2-0 in the second round of last year’s tournament.

Martin Methodist, which is seeded 10th this year championship event, advanced to the semifinal by defeating Oklahoma Baptist (15-6-1) in first round action by a score of 1-0. The Warriors and Red Hawks met earlier this season when Westmont traveled to Kentucky for two games at Lindsey Wilson. On September 4, Westmont defeated Martin Methodist 2-1 in overtime.

In the early season game, Westmont trailed 1-0 in the 88th minute when Mitchell scored to tie the game. In the 98th minute, Lillywhite collected her first goal of the year off an assist by Steck.

The winner of this year’s second round game will advance to the quarterfinals the following day. The semifinals and finals will be held on Friday and Saturday, December 5 and 6.
