(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) The Westmont women’s tennis team (1-0) opened their 2015 season off with a 9-0 sweep against UC Santa Cruz (0-1)  last Saturday.

When the women matched up against Santa Cruz last season, they battled their hearts out, but ultimately lost 4-5. This season, they wanted to come out with a vengeance. Prior to the opener, second year coach Kendyll McManigal said, “Last year we lost to UCSC in a heart breaker. Even though we lost, the final match we lost was 5-7 in an intense third set. I think this year will show our improvement when we play them. The girls are looking forward to seeing how we compare and how this one turns out.”

Considering that the women walked away with a final score of 9-0, it’s safe to say that the Warriors certainly are not disappointed with this year’s results.

Junior standout Lauren Stratman played in the number one singles position where she defeated Courtney Lymburner 6-1, 6-1. She was followed by the newest member of the Warrior roster Ines Costamagna who shutout her UCSC competitor 6-0, 6-0. Hayley Strandness held down the number three spot with final scores of 6-0, 7-6(2). Both Grace Davis and Emily Keach defeated their opponents 6-1, 6-0 and Fernanda Rivera earned the 6th singles point of the day with a 6-0, 7-5 win over UCSC’s Zoe Brook.

Westmont carried their dominant performance into their doubles play where they added three more points to their already perfect performance. Stratman and Costamagna proved to be a dynamic duo as they swept the Banana Slug’s number one doubles team 8-0. Meyer and Strandness walked away with an 8-5 win in the number two position while senior duet Grace Davis and Emily Keach brought home an 8-1 win.

With this sweep, the Warriors start their 2015 season off with a record of 1-0. They will be taking the Abbott Tennis Courts again on Saturday January 31 as they go up against CSU Northridge at 12:00 p.m.
