Ron Smith from Westmont College has been named the Golden State Athletic Conference Sports Information Director of the Year. This is Smith’s first Sports Information of the Year award in the second year the GSAC has had such an award.

The SID of the Year award is based on a vote of the sports information directors working at each GSAC School. The winner is decided at the annual conference SID meeting held after the conclusion of the spring seasons.

Smith began his work at Westmont in July of 2004, becoming just the second full-time Sports Information Director in the college’s history. His responsibilities include media relations, website maintenance, video broadcast production, game management, statistical services, athletic publications, social media management and serving as the athletics historian.

“Ron is also a leader amongst the SIDs in the conference,” said GSAC Commissioner Mike Daniels. “He is a professional in every sense of the word and has the best interests of the conference’s student-athletes always in mind. He has been very giving of his time for conference events and has played an integral role in the conference website for many years.”

Smith’s accomplished a lot for Westmont College Athletics, the GSAC and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics over the past year, serving in key leadership roles at all three levels. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities as an SID, Smith serves on the NAIA-SIDA board, mentors younger SIDs in the conference and is a national player of the week voter.

“Ron’s loyalty to Westmont, the GSAC and the NAIA is evident to all who come in contact with him. He is positive and upbeat, encouraging in his word and deed,” said GSAC Information Director Sheri Pine. “Above it all, Ron is a committed family man, a loving husband and a proud father and grandfather, exemplifying the finest qualities of a godly man. He is a true champion of character.”

His work in media relations garnered Westmont Athletics 205 stories in the Santa Barbara News-Press and 220 articles on Presidio Sports in 2014-15. He also coordinated to get video highlights, stories and reports on Westmont Athletics featured on the local ABC affiliate, KEYT.

During the last year Smith has increased the exposure for Westmont Athletics on its various social media channels, seeing a 35 percent spike in Facebook “Likes.” He produced 177 press releases on the Westmont Athletics website that he built and maintains, and he also serves as the chairperson of the Westmont Athletics Awards Committee, which was responsible for a number of conference and national award wins, including the NAIA Coach of Character, Russell Smelley.

Outside of his institutional responsibilities Smith assisted with media relations at the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship final site, served as the site manager for two postseason competitions, traveled to two conference schools to mentor fellow SIDs and represented the school’s athletic department at the NAIA National Convention and the GSAC Administrative Meetings.

Somehow, in his spare time Smith volunteers running the scoreboard for local high school athletic events.

Prior to his time at Westmont Smith worked in online media for four years after nearly 20 years of a career in ministry.

Smith holds a B.A. in Religion from Pepperdine University and has completed coursework toward an M.A. in Religion. He and his wife Leslie have three grown children (Hannah, Josh and Naomi) and four granddaughters (Cailyn, Jaana, Ellie and Isabelle).
