Warriors Sweep USTA/ITA West Regional NAIA Titles

2010_Regional_logo_web_USTA_ITAWestmont senior Laura Stratman claimed the singles championship at the USTA/ITA Westmont Regional NAIA Championship and teamed up with freshman Isabel Lee to capture the doubles tournament crown as well

In the singles tournament, Stratman, the number one seed, defeated second-seeded Desiree Jackson of Arizona Christian in the championship match by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

In four matches, Stratman lost just five games. After receiving an opening round bye, Stratman defeated Lauren Garcia, also of Arizona Christian 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Stratman took on Brooke Ferslov-Jensen of San Diego Christian, defeating her 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals, Stratman defeated third-seeded Mikayla Morgan of Arizona Christian 6-0, 6-0.

Lee reached the semifinals of the singles tournament where she fell to Jackson 7-5, 6-3. Lee also started play in the round of 16 where she defeated Arizona Christians Iulia Marcenco 6-1, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Lee upset fourth-seeded Kathryn Ashford of Biola 6-3, 5-7, (10-5) to advance to the semifinals.

Westmont’s Maria Rivera lost her opening round match against Susan Carmichael of Biola 6-3, 6-3.

In the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, Stratman and Lee posted an 8-2 win over San Diego Christians’ Ferslov-Jensen and Heather Borsos. In the semifinals, Stratman and Lee defeated Marcenco and Sullins of Arizona Christian 8-0.

The doubles championship match pitted Stratman and Lee against Jackson and Morgan where the Warriors defeated the Arizona Christian duo by scores of 6-2, 4-6, (10-2).

Stratman and Lee will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships where they will match up against the winners of the other seven regionals. The national championships will be held October 15-18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.
