Second ranked Westmont Women’s Basketball (26-3, 15-1 GSAC) became Golden State Athletic Conference champions and earned the number one seed in the GSAC Tournament when they conquered Menlo (11-18, 4-12) by a score of 79-52.

For the second game in a row, four Warriors scored in the double figures. Aimee Brakken led the Warriors in scoring and put up 15 points – all from the three-point line. She also pulled down two rebounds. Aysia Shellmire shot at 100 percent from the field (7-7) to tally 14 points along with five rebounds.

Krissy Karr put up 13 points, pulled down three rebounds, and led in assists with nine. McCoy added ten points, had an assist, and led in rebounds with seven.

The Warriors seized momentum when they began the game with a nine-point run to take an early nine point lead. McCoy had two layups and a free throw, Karr had a jump shot, and Shellmire had a layup.

Westmont held and improved upon this lead in the second quarter with another nine point run. This run consisted of two layups by Shellmire, a jump shot by Karr, and a three-pointer by Karlie Storkson. The first half ended with the Warriors ahead by 14 points (45-31).

The Warriors pulled even further ahead when they went on a ten-point run to take a 24-point lead to finish out the third quarter (65-41). McCoy began the run with a layup, Lauren Sende followed with a jump shot, Kayla Sato added two free throws, Karr had a three-pointer, and Cora Chan finished it off with a free throw.

“I am really excited for our players to have reached this goal of theirs to win the GSAC regular season championship,” expressed head coach Kirsten Moore. “Our conference is extremely difficult and to sustain our focus, effort and performance over a 16 game season took a lot from each person on our team. Hopefully we have a lot of post-season basketball left to play, but today we get to celebrate this accomplishment and build on it as we head into the post-season season.”

The Warriors have earned the number one seed in the GSAC Tournament and have a bye for the first round of the tournament. They will play in a semi-final game against an opponent to be determined next Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Fullerton.
