The Warriors’ 13-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday afternoon as #6 Westmont (39-8) suffered a 4-0 loss to Antelope Valley (38-14). The loss came at the hands of Pioneers’ pitcher Ayrton Costa (10-3) who pitched a complete-game shutout in his final collegiate appearance. Costa scattered six Warrior hits over nine innings and fanned five batters without surrendering a walk.

Westmont’s Brendon Shoemake took the loss, his first of the year against four wins. The senior gave up two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings of play. Shoemake struck out three and walked two. Stephen Larson was charged with the other two runs (one earned), which he gave up on two hits in two innings of work.

Antelope Valley put up two runs in the top of the sixth after Nycholas Bongiovanni produced a lead-off double down the left filed line. Bongiovanni advanced to third on an infield single by Darron Teson, the Pioneers’ catcher. After Teson was replaced on the base pads by Neal White, Travis Holm walked to load the bases with no outs.

Michael Pereznegron was then walked, resulting in Bongiovanni scoring from third. Nicholas Ridio grounded out to the pitcher, allowing White to score the second run of the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Pereznegron laid a bunt down the third base line that gave Westmont’s Graylin Derke no play at first. Ridio then ground out to first for the second out of the inning, advancing Pereznegron. Julio Rivera then singled to center field to drive in Pereznegron and took second on a Warrior miscue. Rivera was sent home on a single up the middle by Mitchell Hobbs and slid around the tag to record the Pioneer’s fourth and final run.

The Warriors return to Golden State Athletic Conference play on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Atherton to take on the Oaks of Menlo (32-18, 15-12). The Warriors need to win just one game of the three-game series to become the sole GSAC Regular Season Champions and become the hosts for the GSAC Tournament. The GSAC Tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 9.
