For the 54th time, Westmont and UCSB Men’s Soccer faced off in the Bryant’s Cup. UCSB claimed a 3-0 win in the exhibition event to improve its series advantage to 27-23-4.

Jouse Espana scored the first two goals for the Gauchos. In the seventh minute, Espana score from 25 yards out on a ball that deflected off a defender before finding the net. Epsana scored again in the 31st minute, heading in a serve from Randy Mendoza on the left side.

Nick DePuy added the final goal in the 51st minute, heading in a cross from Dalton Pando on the right side.

The Warriors’ best chance to score came in the eighth minute after Augie Andrade drew a foul in the box. Andrade took the resulting penalty kick, but his shot deflected off of the left post and back into the field of play.

“I think that the take away right now is that we had a good response in the second half,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. “We were able to do some things on the ball that we struggled to do in first half. I thought we were able to move the ball better and keep it for some sustained periods of time. I thought we were able to get ourselves forward a little bit. I was pleased with the response.

“The good news is that we have a lot of different guys that can play,” continued Wolf. “The bad news is that I’m not exactly sure what the right combinations are. With 11 new guys – eight of them freshman – that has to be an understood part of the process. In games like this were the exposure is so high, you find out who is able to cope with it and who struggles a little bit. As always, it’s a great learning experience.”

Two veterans who helped to keep the Warriors in the game were center backs Genaro Hurtado and Josh Constant.

“I thought Genaro and Josh were absolutely top class,” said Wolf. “They were superb.”

The Warriors’ home opener will be played next Saturday when they host Antelope Valley at 3:30 p.m.
