Second ranked Westmont Women’s basketball (1-0) launched their 2016-17 season with a 65-50 victory over their former Golden State Athletic Conference rival, the Division II Cougars of Azusa Pacific. For the Warriors, returning starters and NAIA All-Americans Aysia Shellmire and Lauren McCoy each had a double-double on the night – Shellmire with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and McCoy with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Aimee Brakken and Cora Chan were also key offensive contributors putting up 15 and 11 points respectively.

Two minutes into the game, the Warriors were down 3-6 and embarked upon an 11-4 run to take a four point lead to end the first period (14-10). Brakken had a three-pointer and a jump shot, Morgan Haskin put up a layup, and McCoy added on two more layups.

In the second period the Warriors doubled this lead and the first half ended with the Warriors ahead 30-22. In the third period, the Warriors pulled away when they outscored the Cougars 16-6. They kicked off the third period with a nine minute long 13-4 run to take an 18 point lead (43-26). The run began with layups by McCoy and Shellmire – both assisted by Kayla Sato; McCoy added another layup and the subsequent free-throw, Haskin notched on two more layups, and Shellmire had two free-throws.

In the fourth period, the Cougars made up some ground and outscored the Warriors 22-19, but ultimately could not bridge the gap.

Coming up this week, the Warriors will play in two away exhibition games – on Thursday they will travel to Los Angeles to play UCLA at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday they will head north to face UC Berkley at 2:00 p.m.
