Twice, the Mustangs of The Master’s College (6-4-1, 1-1-1), came from behind to pull even with the #20 Westmont Warriors in Tuesday’s men’s soccer match which ended in 2-2 a double-overtime tie. The last goal scored came with just three and one-half minutes left in regulation to force the overtime periods.

“Our playoff hopes took a serious blow today,” said a disappointed Westmont Head Coach Dave Wolf. “This is one of the teams you scrap with to get into the playoffs. We squandered two leads. If you’re gong to be a good team, you can’t do that.”

Westmont’s twentieth ranked men’s soccer hosted #3 Azusa Pacific (6-1-1, 1-0-1) as part of homecoming activities on the Westmont campus, and walked away with a 0-0 double overtime tie. Senior goalkeeper Logan Frank produced nine saves in the game, as the Cougars out shot the Warriors by more than a two-one ratio (23-11).

Thirty-six fouls were called in the fast-paced game and two yellow cards were received by each team. But while both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, the only thing that found the back of the net was Frank’s foot. Frank, after jumping after a ball which traveled above the goal, grabbed the cross bar and found that his momentum carried his foot into the net. His shoes became entangled in the net and he had to call for help from his teammates while holding himself up.

Honoring athletes from different eras, Westmont Athletics inducted three individuals into the Hall of Fame on Friday night – Bill Bakley, Dan Heinrichs and Justin Wall.

Bakley, a Westmont decathlete from the early 1970s was presented by legendary track and field coach Jim Klein who guided the track and field program from 1960-1977 establishing an impressive tradition of excellence.

“Bill came to Santa Barbara and visited both UC Santa Barbara and Westmont,” reported Klein. “Without the scholarships we were able to offer, Bill would have gone to UCSB.”

Twentieth ranked Westmont men’s soccer opened the Golden State Athletic Conference season with a 2-1 loss at #16 Concordia (6-2, 1-0) on Wednesday. The Warriors lone goal came in the sixth minute of play.

“Jon Schoff sent a shot across the face of the goal,” reported Warrior head coach Dave Wolf. “The keeper got a hand on it but couldn’t quite get it under control. Johnny (Alcaraz) was there to put it away.”

Westmont men’s soccer (5-3), ranked #13 in the nation, played host to Arizona’s Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (6-6-1) this afternoon at Russ Carr field and won 2-1 in the Warriors’ final game before the conference schedule begins next week.

“It was a hard game to play in because it was quite physical,” said senior midfielder Michael Thompson. “There were a lot of things fans and refs aren’t seeing off the ball - a lot of talking, a lot of kicking in the heels, and a lot of scrapping. It’s hard to keep playing under those conditions. We got a little caught up in it, but in the end we pulled through and when it mattered we played the ball quick enough to keep it away from them.”

Thirteenth ranked Westmont men’s soccer claimed their fourth win of the season as the Warriors defeated the Griffins of Westminster by a score of 2-0. Westminster, which boasts a record of 6-5, is now 0-5 against the Golden State Athletic Conference, having previously lost to Fresno Pacific, Point Loma Nazarene, Biola and Vanguard. Today’s game was played at Azusa Pacific.

“I’m pleased with the number of chances we were able to create especially considering that we were without Johnny Alcaraz today,” said head coach Dave Wolf. “Blake Thompson gave us a lift stepping in for Johnny and it was really the first contribution he has been able to make this season.”

Westmont men’s soccer (3-3) lost a close battle to the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur (3-2-2) in Cupertino this morning by a score of 2-1. All of the scoring took place in a span of eight minutes.

Notre Dame’s Robert Morini opened the scoring with a goal off a corner kick by Daniel Pena in the fifty-second minute. But the thirteenth ranked Warriors answered back less than three minutes later. Senior Sam Hartman took a shot at the goal which bounced off the keeper and found Michael Thompson. Thompson buried the ball in the net to knot the game at one.

The Graceland Yellowjackets (Iowa) pulled off a 2-0 upset over #13 Westmont Men’s Soccer at Russ Carr Field on Thursday afternoon. Graceland scored one goal in each half to claim the win.

Graceland (3-1) took nine shots while the Warriors got off eight shots during the contest. However, of Gracelands’ nine attempts, seven were on goal whereas the Warriors had only two shots on target. Westmont goalkeeper Logan Frank notched five saves in the game.
