Senior Anna Gropp connected on a penalty kick and sophomore Amy Lawson added an insurance goal to help #7 Westmont women’s soccer to a 2-0 win over Holy Names (5-6-1) in the first round of the NAIA Region II Tournament. With the win, the Warriors advance to the semifinals where they will play #1 Azusa Pacific (16-1, 9-1).

“I thought we did a good job adjusting to the field and Holy Name’s style of play in order to create chances for ourselves,” said head coach Rebecca Mouw. The game was played at Pioneer Stadium on the campus of Cal State East Bay in Hayward, where there is a significant crown running through the middle of the field.

Seventh ranked Westmont women’s soccer will travel to Oakland for a first round NAIA Region II Tournament game against Holy Names (5-5,5-0), the California Pacific Conference champion. The game will be played at 1:00 p.m. on the campus of Cal State Hayward.

The Warriors (12-4-1, 7-2-1) received the fifth seed in the regional championship despite a second place finish in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings. The top seed was awarded to GSAC champion Azusa Pacific (15-1, 9-1) which will host the eighth seeded Menlo (10-6-1, 4-1), the only other team to qualify out of the Cal-Pac.

Point Loma Nazarene scored a goal in the fifteenth minute of play and that proved to be the ball game as #7 Westmont women’s soccer lost to Point Loma Nazarene (11-4-0, 7-1-1) in San Diego by a score of 1-0. The Warriors (12-4-1, 7-2-1) finished the Golden State Athletic Conference in second place having accumulated 22 points in the GSAC standings. Azusa Pacific (15-1-0, 9-1-0) finished first with 27 points and Point Loma Nazarene finished third with 21 points.

The goal came on a corner kick by the Sea Lions’ Rebecca Lewis who connected with Christine Grover. Grover headed the ball in the net for the score. Westmont out shot Point Loma 18-5 but only six of the Warrior’s attempts were on target.

Junior midfielder Andria Carlson scored her first collegiate goal which proved to be the game winner as #8 Westmont women’s soccer defeated the Royals of Hope International (0-9, 3-12-1) by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. The win, combined with a 1-0 loss by #7 Point Loma Nazarene, assures the Warriors of a first round home game in the upcoming NAIA Region II Championships.

“It was a team effort today,” said Mouw whose team received a lot of support from players off the bench. “Lauren Burtis came in and did a great job giving us possession in the midfield. She was calm on the ball and composed. Kelsey Sinclair also did a great job when she came into the game. Kelsey was running at people and making them defender her.

Two seniors provided the goals as #8 Westmont women’s soccer defeated the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific (6-7-2, 3-5-0) by a score of 2-1 on Senior Day to pick up their third win in a row. Since losing the GSAC opener to Concordia on September 26, the Warriors have posted a 6-0-1 record against conference opponents and are in second place in the GSAC, two points behind #2 Azusa Pacific (7-1-0) and one point ahead of #7 Point Loma Nazarene (6-2-0, 11-3-0).

“Fresno Pacific came out really hard and did a good job of putting us under,” assessed Head Coach Rebecca Mouw. “It took a little bit too long to respond, but we did and scored the go ahead goal. I thought we did a much better job of possessing, working hard and winning 50-50 balls, as the first half progressed and into the second half.

Sophomore forward Amy Lawson recorded her eighth and ninth goals of the season to propel #9 Westmont women’s soccer to a 2-0 victory over the Eagles of Biola on Monday night in La Mirada. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Werner recorded seven saves on the way to her sixth shutout of the year. With the win, the Warriors advance to 10-3-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Westmont’s first goal came in the tenth minute of play off a shot from senior forward Katie Rhodes. Keri Schultz, the Eagle goalkeeper, misplayed the ball from Rhodes and Amy Lawson was there to finish the goal for the Warriors.

Junior defender Heather Brown scored the first goal of her collegiate career as #9 Westmont women’s soccer defeated #13 California Baptist (8-4-1, 2-3-1) in Riverside this afternoon by a score of 2-0. With the win, the Warriors improve their overall record to 9-3-1 and their conference record to 4-1-1.

“We had a great team effort to day,” said Head Coach Rebecca Mouw. Our backs did a great job and the players coming off the bench did everything we asked them to do.”

The Warriors’ first goal came of a corner kick in the sixth minute of play. Anna Gropp launched a corner kick to the far post which Brown headed into the net.

Senior forward Katie Rhodes scored early in the second half for #12 Westmont Women’s Soccer (8-3-1, 3-1-1), but #25 Vanguard came up with the equalizer with seven minutes left in regulation as the two squads battled to a 1-1 tie.

“Vanguard is a very good, strong defensive team,” said Head Coach Rebecca Mouw. “When they got forward we didn’t adjust to the transitional game as we normally do. That really hurt us, but we came out early in the second half and got a goal.”

Rhodes headed the ball into the net in the fifty-seventh minute off a cross from junior midfielder Brianna Russo. The goal was only the fifth allowed by Vanguard (8-2-1, 2-2-1) this season.
