Ballet patrons lucky enough to score tickets to a new version of Cinderella being staged next week will find something decidedly different on the stage: Along with a handsome prince, a beautiful princess, glittering costumes and graceful dancers from Los Gatos Ballet, the production–which debuts at West Valley Community College Theater on May 25–will be heavily laced with humor. … Los Gatos High School senior Madeleine Webber and Margot Aknin, a senior at Valley Christian, will each dance the lead in two performances as the scullery girl who lives happily ever after with her prince. … After graduation Webber will attend Westmont College in Santa Barbara, and will continue dancing with the State Street Ballet. San Jose native Aknin will enter the Pittsburg Ballet Theater as a trainee, and aims for a professional career in dance. more

Biola clarifies stance on human sexuality: After an underground gay group came out, the Christian school assures support to students struggling with same-sex attraction

Less than a week after President Barack Obama announced his support for gay marriage, a small group of gay Biola University students came out on the La Mirada, Calif., campus. Flyers posted around the campus lawn announced the presence of the previously underground group, which does not have official recognition at the Christian school. … Westmont College, in Montecito, Calif., had to tackle similar issues last year when 31 gay alumni wrote an open letter to the school describing their “doubt, loneliness and fear” during their time as students. more

Family and friends are invited to help celebrate the life of Alex Moore at a memorial service on Tuesday, May 15, at 4 p.m. at Santa Barbara Community Church, 1002 Cieneguitas Road. A reception at the church will follow the service. Dr. Moore, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Westmont College, died May 9 from complications following surgery for Crohn’s disease. He was 31. He joined the Westmont faculty in 2011. more
