Warriors are winning the hearts of Africa

A dozen Westmont College women are on top of the world.

They are ranked No. 2 in the nation for NAIA basketball, and they have an excellent chance of climbing to the top when the next poll comes out in January.

But they are already No. 1 in the hearts of Africa.

The Warriors won over northern Uganda during a two-week trip in August while teaching basketball and the Christian gospel, among other lessons, to thousands of Africans. more

Holiday cheer comes to children in hospital

Young patients and their families at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital were given a holiday tree decorating party Monday thanks to a group that provieds holiday parties at hospitals.

In the festively adorned play room of the pediatric unit, children decorated miniature holiday trees donated by Just Imagine It while the members of the Westmont College Choir, wearing Santa hats and reindeer antlers, sang Christmas classics like “Jingle Bells” and “Frosty the Snowman.” more

ON STAGE: ‘A Christmas Carol’ gets fresh twist

Lit Moon Theatre Company will combine actors and puppets in “Humbug! A (Lit Moon) Christmas Carol” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Westmont College’s Porter Theatre, 955 La Paz Road, Montecito. Artistic Director John Blondell is the writer and director of this interpretation of the Charles Dickens classic. more

Graduates told to run their race with the focus on Jesus

Apply what you have learned at Fresno Pacific University in your own life and in hard times, a California Assemblymember told the fall 2015 graduating class during commencement ceremonies December 11. …A Modesto native now raising three children there with her husband, Rod, Olsen served on the Modesto City Council from 2005-2010 while working as assistant vice president for communications & public affairs at California State University, Stanislaus. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Westmont College. more

CLHS Names Robby Cherry as Head XC Coach

Crean Lutheran High School has named Robby Cherry as the school’s new Head Cross Country Coach & Program Director. …As a collegian, Cherry enjoyed great success while running for Westmont College, where he was a three-time NAIA All-American. He also earned Academic All-American honors and graduated from Westmont as the top-ranked student in the Math Department during his senior year. more

OUR TOWN: ‘Given to the Light’

“Given to the Light,” an exhibit of artwork by Susan Savage, is on display through Jan. 29 in the Leigh Block Gallery at Hospice of Santa Barbara, 2050 Alameda Padre Serra, Suite 100. Ms. Savage earned her master of fine arts degree at UCSB and has lived in Santa Barbara for 47 years. A retired Westmont College professor emeritus, she pursued various forms of media in her early teaching career before focusing on painting. Her artwork has been featured in many local invitational exhibitions and nationally at the Canton Museum of Art in Ohio, Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois, Calvin College in Michigan and the New York Center for Art and Media Studies. more

Christmas Carolers, Nonprofit Bring Cheer to Santa Barbara Cottage Pediatric Patients

The typically quiet halls of the pediatric unit at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital were filled Monday with the sound of festive tunes and the faces of locals trying to spread holiday cheer.

Some of the 20 or so children receiving treatment at the hospital followed that music into a larger room at the end of the hall, where the Westmont College choir members snapped their fingers and swayed along with the Christmas carols they were singing.

Youngsters and their parents were greeted with renditions of “It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “Let It Snow,” along with a nurse dressed up like Mrs. Claus. more

Temecula Attorney Dwight Kealy announces Congressional seat bid

Born in Southern California but attending and graduating from high school in Ecaudor, Dwight returned to the United States to attend, and graduate, from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, before going on to complete his Master’s Degree at Yale University. During his studies he did his graduate work in Israel with Harvard University. more

Kealy for Congress conducts campaign stop in Beaumont

Kealy graduated in 1989 from Alliance Academy in Quito, Ecuador. He spent time studying in Israel. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in religious studies from Westmont College where he met Sharon, his wife of 17 years. He received a master’s degree in religious studies from Yale University, and earned his law degree at Concord Law School in Los Angeles. more

Stay home, terrorists
