Members of Mariners 936 of Dana Point achieve Sea Scouting’s highest award

Mariners 936 Sea Scouts have announced that members Lily Maranto and Emma Lottman have been awarded Sea Scouting’s highest rank of Quartermaster. Nationwide, only about 40 Scouts achieve this honor each year. … Lottman graduated from Crean Lutheran High School and will attend Westmont College in the fall. more

Jazzercise at noon and a college degree at 80

Suzanne Stricker’s siblings were so proud of her college graduation that they traveled 7,000 miles to attend the ceremony. Her brother, sister and brother-in-law flew from New Zealand, where Stricker was born and raised, to Dallas as a surprise. At 80 years old, Stricker was the oldest University of Texas at Dallas student to graduate this May. … Stricker — who briefly attended the Westmont College in Santa Barbara in her 20s  — became a student once again in 2011. more

Ukiah First Presbyterian hires new youth/family minister

Alexis Moore has recently joined the ranks at First Presbyterian Church-Ukiah as its director of Youth and Families Ministries. Jerry Garcia, a church Elder, said, “July is a new beginning for our new director of Youth and Family Ministries, and Alexis is running at full speed to see that summer Vacation Bible School is on track. We welcome her to our church family.” … Moore had this to say about her background: “I am a Bay Area native and graduate of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. where I received my BA in Fine Art. more

Former MHS Basketball Players Shooting for College Hoops Dreams: Weeks after graduation, practice isn’t slowing down for four recent alumni.

The only sound that emanated from the Malibu High School gym one early afternoon last week was the dribble of a basketball followed by a swoosh of nylon. Former Malibu High basketball player and 2018 MHS graduate Jake Hughes worked on his craft all alone. … With every dribble and shot made Hughes, a sharp-shooting forward on the Sharks hoops squad the past few seasons, hopes he gets closer to his dream of joining the basketball team at Westmont College in Santa Barbara this fall. more

Cynthia Grutzik appointed dean of SF State’s Graduate College of Education

Cynthia Grutzik has been appointed dean of San Francisco State University’s Graduate College of Education (GCOE), the University announced today. She succeeds Interim Dean Nancy Robinson, who has served in the position since January 2017. Her appointment is effective August 6, 2018. … Grutzik received a bachelor’s degree in diversified studies from Westmont College, a teaching credential from Fullerton State University, a master’s degree in language, reading and culture from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. in education and information studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. more

Pastor Jerry Tankersley will retire after 46 years at Laguna Presbyterian Church

After 46 years at Laguna Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Jerry Tankersley is retiring. The senior pastor will give his last sermon Sunday and officially retire June 30. … He received a bachelor’s degree from Westmont College and a bachelor’s of divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary, followed by a master’s of theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and doctorate degrees from Claremont Graduate University and its theology school. more

Oilers pitcher Merrill battles adversity with blind eye

Austin Merrill seems like a natural on the mound. As a high school senior, Merrill led the pitching staff on the La Costa Canyon varsity baseball team with a sparkling campaign — a minuscule sub-1.00 ERA over 40 innings of work that netted him six wins in seven decisions along the way of a 23-7 season for the Mavericks. …An assistant coach at U.C. San Diego said he felt for Merrill after the offer was gone, and tried to reach out to other teams, including Westmont College in Santa Barbara, which could offer him a full-ride scholarship. more
