New students flock to Westmont College orientation to open school year

It was a first day of smiles and sunshine for incoming Westmont College first-year students at the school’s orientation and move-in day Thursday.

“Everyone here is just so nice,” said Jennifer Huang, a first-year student from Brazil. “[Everyone here] welcomed us in.” more

Westmont welcomes diverse class

Westmont College welcomes one of its most racially diverse classes for orientation today.

According to a college news release, the 420 first year students hail from eight countries and 31 states. Nearly 18 percent identify as first generation college students and 37 percent identify as Hispanic, Asian, Black, Hawaiian Pacific Islander, Native American, and/or mixed-race. more

Home For Good seeks to assist State Street homeless

The United Way is spearheading an effort to assist the homeless population in downtown Santa Barbara. The man on the front line is Jeff Shaffer, director of community engagement for the nonprofit’s Home For Good program. … Home For Good will also try and build off the work done by groups like Santa Barbara County AmeriCorps, People Assisting Homeless (PATH), State Street Ambassadors, the county Behavior and Wellness team, and shelter providers, among others, while also getting others like UCSB and Westmont, and local nonprofit Hustlers for Humanity involved. more

Bradley Logg (1965-2018)

Bradley John Logg, 53, of South Pasadena, CA, passed on July 24, 2018. He was born on July 16, 1965 to John and Nancy Logg and is survived by his mother, Nancy; his brothers Chris and Gregg; and his nieces and nephews Mia, Andrew, Christopher, Natalia, Axel and Lukas. Bradley graduated from South Pasadena High School (’83) and continued on to Westmont College where he received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. more

Gauchos Shut Out Westmont 7-0 in Promising Exhibition Opener

One year ago, the UCSB men’s soccer team was upset by Westmont College 2-1 in their annual exhibition game– a shocking result that gave the Warriors their first win over the Gauchos since 2000, in addition to foreshadowing a down year for Santa Barbara.

On Saturday, Coach Tim Vom Steeg and the Gauchos returned the favor in style, dominating Westmont in all facets of the game en route to a 7-0 blowout victory. more

Chloe Howard suddenly felt ashamed.

“At lunch one day in November 2014, I was at a new school,” the 18-year-old Westmont College freshman explained recently at the News-Press. “I was called over to another lunch table (outside), and these girls said, ‘Chloe, take off your shoe.’ And I said ‘no.’ I said ‘no’ several times.

“They said, ‘Fine, we’ll take off your shoe.’ I was restrained, and the two perpetrators ripped off my shoes and exposed my deformed foot to a group of their friends,” Miss Howard said. She was recalling the assault that took place in her freshman year at a high school in Los Gatos, near San Jose. more

Kicking It at Home: Gauchos set record for largest margin of victory against local rival in season opener

Junior forward Ignacio Tellechea got the UCSB men’s soccer team going early in Saturday’s exhibition match against Westmont, and the Gauchos kept it going from there.

Tellechea, a 6-foot-1 striker from Madrid, Spain, scored from 8 yards on the right off assists from fellow forwards Noah Billingsley and Rodney Michael in the 12th minute, as UCSB rolled to a 7-0 win in front of 1,587 in attendance at Harder Stadium. more
