COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER: Westmont, UCSB women will give local soccer a cross-town kickoff

The first touch to the local college sports season will come on Saturday at 7 p.m. when Westmont College travels across town to UCSB for a women’s exhibition soccer match at Harder Stadium.

The Warriors, who advanced to last year’s NAIA quarterfinals while finishing with a 16-4-2 record, gave the NCAA Division 1 Gauchos a scare in last year’s exhibition. Former Santa Barbara High star Jackie Lopez tied the match with a goal early in the second half, only to have UCSB score twice in the final 13 minutes for a 3-1 victory. more

‘Hometown Hero’ fights cancer with community support Bothell firefighter, volunteer and “rad dad” Kirk Robinson is battling metastatic melanoma.

Kirk Robinson’s Facebook feed is full of uplifting content: photos of his firefighting career, videos of his two boys skateboarding and boating, inspirational news stories, family selfies and “throwback” memes. There is so much negativity in the world, he said, and he likes to share the good things. But at the beginning of the summer, he decided to post something more personal, and less positive: that he’s been fighting cancer for the past year and a half. … Robinson went to Westmont College and studied kinesiology and sports medicine. His decision to become a firefighter surprised almost no one, as Robinson was always known as a “problem solver and a helper.” He joined Mercer Island’s auxiliary firefighting force in 1999, and was hired full-time at the Bothell Fire Department in April 2001. He also served as an EMT in Mercer Island’s Marine Patrol. more

Martin Garber Obituary

Rev. Martin M. Garber of Grace Village Retirement Community of Winona Lake, Indiana passed away at 5:26 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Kosciusko Community Hospital of Warsaw at the age of 93.

He was born on June 14, 1925 in Ripon, California to Alma (Cover) Garber and George Garber.  On October 18, 1946 he was married to Beverly Jean (Wooley) Garber, who survives.

Martin proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946.  He graduated from Westmont College in California and Grace Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana. more

Fiesta ends on a good note: West Coast Symphony performs at Sunken Garden

Hundreds gathered Sunday afternoon at the Courthouse Sunken Garden for the annual West Coast Symphony Fiesta Concert, a tradition dating to 1966. Led by Michael Shasberger, artistic director of the symphony, the West Coast Symphony treated the audience to “festive and celebratory” tunes, as Dr. Shasberger called them, to close out Fiesta celebrations. “It is wonderful to be outdoors in the beautiful Courthouse gardens,” Dr. Shasberger said. “The symphony is just delighted to be here.” more

OUT and ABOUT: Postma joins Friendship Center board

Hank Postma has joined the board of directors of the Friendship Center. Mr. Postma is vice president and senior asset manager at MUFG Union Bank, where he manages all real estate assets in the Central Coast region for the Private Bank. He has also worked in international sales and real estate. A graduate of Westmont College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in religious studies, Mr. Postma lives in Carpinteria with his wife and two young daughters. more

The Rev. Martin M. Garber of Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake, passed away at 5:26 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, at the age of 93.

He was born June 14, 1925, in Ripon, Calif., to Alma Cover Garber and George Garber. On Oct. 18, 1946, he was married to Beverly Jean Wooley, who survives.

Martin proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from Westmont College in California and Grace Seminary in Winona Lake. more
