Westmont College plans to build 13 condos in Santa Barbara: Employees will move in late summer 2018

13 Westmont College faculty members and their families will become neighbors with Oak Park Drive residents in Santa Barbara. The private Christian college hopes its second employee housing project will help it retain and recruit employees. “Unfortunately, there are several instances over the years where we’ve had some folks who have not been able to come because of the housing prices,” said Doug Jones, vice president of finance for Westmont College. more

Total solar eclipse coming in August

The sun will disappear behind the moon on August 21, creating the first total solar eclipse in the U.S. since 1979. “The sky will go somewhat dark, you will see stars even through its 10 or 11 o’clock in the morning, and a sunrise or sunset in all directions,” said Ken Kihlstrom, head of the physics department at Westmont College. more

Westmont College physics professor Ken Kihlstrom has been reading up on a new discovery reported in Nature magazine. During an interview near the campus planetarium, Kihlstrom said he was exited to hear about a planet discovered 40 light years away that may be inhabitable. more

Project Grad Students Learn About Jupiter and Juno On First Day At Westmont: Westmont College Observatory offers view of planet being studied by NASA

On their first day at Westmont College, Project Grad students said the Keck Telescope helped them understand the Juno spacecraft’s arrival in Jupiter’s orbit on Independence Day. The Westmont Observatory’s Keck Telescope is a 24-inch F/8 Cassegrain reflecting instrument with Richey-Chretien optics. Visitors are able to climb a ladder and look at Jupiter during the early evening. They can’t see Juno, the spacecraft that launched in 2011 it isn’t big enough even though it is said to be the size of a basketball court. more
