On their first day at Westmont College, Project Grad students said the Keck Telescope helped them understand the Juno spacecraft’s arrival in Jupiter’s orbit on Independence Day. The Westmont Observatory’s Keck Telescope is a 24-inch F/8 Cassegrain reflecting instrument with Richey-Chretien optics. Visitors are able to climb a ladder and look at Jupiter during the early evening. They can’t see Juno, the spacecraft that launched in 2011 it isn’t big enough even though it is said to be the size of a basketball court. more

Brianna Hammond is well out of her comfort zone but she can’t stand around and not help.
Instead she is running, boy is she ever. The 2003 Westmont College graduate is running in the oldest Ultramarathon in the world, Comrades in South Africa.
It is a 56 mile run that must be completed in 12 hours. Hammond is doing the run to raise sponsorship money for the poorest kids in the world, the DR Congo. more

The fire burned 210 homes in Montecito, a community that stretches across city and county lines. County planners said about 31 percent of the homes in its jurisdiction have not been rebuilt. Santa Barbara City planners said about 20 percent of the homes have not been rebuilt, although some are in the midst of making a comeback. …Westmont Physics professor Ken Kihlstrom lost more than most. The fire burned his office on campus and his nearby home, while he and his wife were leading a semester abroad. Kihlstrom said he remembers friends calling him to say they could see his home burning on KEYT. more

Brianna is the team leader of a group from Ocean Hills church and Westmont College all running and raising money for clean water projects. Hammond is very proud of her mom’s participation. She has been a great role model for me my entire life of just picking up and following your heart and living beyond yourself Hammond along with fellow team member Chrissy Velazquez went to Kenya last year and saw first hand the positive effects of clean water. more
The Westmont College women’s basketball team started strong while the men had a good finishing kick on Thursday night. It all added up to a sweep.
The No. 2 ranked NAIA Westmont women’s team jumped on Menlo early and never let up. They led by 20 at the half and won 81-56 to improve to 16-2 on the year and 5-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. more
