Eight Years After the Devastating Tea Fire, Many Have Yet to Rebuild Lost Homes

The fire burned 210 homes in Montecito, a community that stretches across city and county lines.  County planners said about 31 percent of the homes in its jurisdiction have not been rebuilt. Santa Barbara City planners said about 20 percent of the homes have not been rebuilt, although some are in the midst of making a comeback. …Westmont Physics professor Ken Kihlstrom lost more than most.  The fire burned his office on campus and his nearby home, while he and his wife were leading a semester abroad. Kihlstrom said he remembers friends calling him to say they could see his home burning on KEYT. more

Westmont Sweeps Doubleheader Against Menlo in Hoops

The Westmont College women’s basketball team started strong while the men had a good finishing kick on Thursday night. It all added up to a sweep.

The No. 2 ranked NAIA Westmont women’s team jumped on Menlo early and never let up. They led by 20 at the half and won 81-56 to improve to 16-2 on the year and 5-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. more

Gaucho Soccer Too Strong for Westmont UCSB Beats Warriors for 15th Straight Time

It’s a game the community always enjoys and it’s a game UCSB almost always wins.

The Gauchos dominated Westmont College 4-1 in the annual exhibition game that UCSB has now won 15 straight times.

Nick DePuy scored two goals while Drew Murphy and Kevin Feucht also added goals as the Gauchos tuned up for their season opener this Friday night at home against Stanford. more

Westmont College in Montecito is known for having an observatory, but you don’t need a giant telescope to watch the Perseid meteor shower also known as the Perseids meteors.

Dr. Ken Kihlstrom said, “The Perseid Meteor shower is going through debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. It gives you a chance to see a shooting star once a minute or two. The best way to see it is to lay back in a lawn chair and look up at the sky.” more
