A special group of athletes traveled across the country and arrived in Santa Barbara before heading to their final destination of the 2015 Special Olympic. Nearly 100 athletes and coaches from Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, and St. Kitts and Nevis and they will be staying in Santa Barbara until Friday. The athletes will stay at Westmont College and use their facilities to train for the world games. Santa Barbara is one out of 85 communities from San Diego to San Luis Obispo that is a host town to the special Olympics. more
Six of UCSB’s record 10 players selected in this year’s MLB Draft were pitchers. …Westmont College had three pitchers selected on the final day. Russell Harmening was drafted in round 26 by the Washington Nationals, Andrew Vasquez goes to Minnesota in the 32nd round and the Twins also take Hector Lujan in the 35th round. more
Westmont College was well represented with Chet Kammerer and Randy Pfund being inducted. Both men have had long successful careers in the NBA. Current Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Jim Eyen was inducted on Sunday night. more
Many of the top high school and college athletes in the Santa Barbara area were honored by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table at the Lobero Theatre. …John Moore won the College Coach of the Year as his Westmont College men’s basketball team made it all the way to the championship game of the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City. more
The highly successful Ventura County Fusion soccer team of the Premier Development League is getting set to begin the 2015 campaign. …Besides the Fusion, Wolf plays at Westmont College in Montecito and is a graduate of Santa Barbara High School. more

Carlene Mitchell could not survive a 2-27 season and today UCSB announced that she is out as the women’s basketball coach. …Mitchell beat out Westmont College Head Coach Kirsten Moore for the job back in 2011. Since that time, Moore won an NAIA National Championship in 2013 for Westmont and she guided her team to the national semifinals this year. Moore will likely be a candidate this time around as well. more
Strong wind gusts overnight caused some damage at Westmont College. Around 9 p.m., the windows and doors were vibrating at the library. “It sounds like a freight train when the wind really kicks up up here,” said Debra Quast, the library director. The high winds cracked one of the library windows as students were studying inside. more
Westmont College missed Daniel Carlin and they missed their three-point shots as they lost in the NAIA Championship game 71-53 to Dalton State of Georgia.
Carlin managed to play just the first three minutes as he could not shake an illness that put him in the hospital during the day. Head Coach John Moore speculated that Carlin had food poisoning. more
