A scorching run by Jason Peterson of the San Marcos cross country team and a stellar volleyball performance by Laguna Blanca’s Caylin Zimmerman in a tournament earned them Athlete of the Week honors on Monday at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe…. The female athletes who were named honorable mention include Gabby Minier (Dos Pueblos golf), the team of Danya Belkin and Lucy Golden (Dos Pueblos tennis) and Taylor Beckman (Westmont volleyball). more

This Week in Local Sports

The fun of the crosstown Channel League girls volleyball matches begins this week as Dos Pueblos visits the Thunderhut to play San Marcos on Tuesday. The action will be intense. This is the first league match for the Royals, while the Chargers started last week with a loss against Buena. Other highlights of the week include Santa Barbara High taking on San Marcos in girls tennis; Westmont soccer hosting a pair of GSAC doubleheaders against William Jessup and Menlo and UCSB women’s volleyball opening Big West play with home matches against UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. more

Providence School Names Director of Development

Caroline Corazza has joined Providence School ‘s advancement team as the director of development. Corazza comes to Providence after serving six years as a development officer for Young America’s Foundation at the Reagan Ranch, where she hosted thousands of supporters from across the country at President Reagan’s Rancho del Cielo and managed events at the Reagan Ranch Center and Rancho del Cielo…. Hurlbert built the alumni program at Heritage Christian Schools in Bakersfield in her four years there and worked in the alumni and parent relations office at Westmont College for nine years. more

Westmont’s Libby Dahlberg Sizzles Against Arizona Christian

Taylor Beckman Plays Big in Her Return to Court for Westmont Volleyball

Senior outside hitter Taylor Beckman made her return to the court on Friday night at Murchison Gymnasium and helped lead NAIA No. 5 Westmont (15-1, 2-0 GSAC) to a three-game sweep (25-13, 25-17, 25-12) of San Diego Christian (5-6, 0-2). Beckman tallied a team-high 11 kills while producing a .346 attack percentage. more

Westmont Women End Soccer Drought Against Azusa Pacific

A pair of goals by Jackie Lopez and another by Renee Gonsalves gave NAIA sixth-ranked Westmont Women’s Soccer a 3-2 victory over Azusa Pacific – the first win over the Cougars since 2009. The game didn’t start well for the Warriors as they gave up a goal in just the second minute of play. Azusa’s Stephanie Lossau scored from 15 yards out after receiving a pass from Kelsey Bushman. more

Eugene R. Kuntz of Santa Maria, 1948-2017

Eugene R. Kuntz died on Sept. 4, 2017, in Santa Maria. He was 69 years old. He was born to the late Verla and Eugene Kuntz in San Jose on Feb. 29, 1948, and was a life-long resident of California…. After graduating from Westmont College in 1970, he worked as a probation officer and then as director of Sea and Summit, a nonprofit wilderness training experience and home for displaced youth in Santa Barbara. more
