Anyone can have a shot at glimpsing the center of the Milky Way galaxy through the Keck Telescope on Friday night when Westmont College opens its observatory to the public free of charge. Kicking off at 8 p.m., the viewing is expected to last several hours. The Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit also is hosting the event. The moon will not rise until after 10:30 p.m., so the view will be clear for spectators, said Thomas Whittemore, a Westmont physics instructor. more

This is the Westmont College Observatory’s 24-inch Keck Telescope, which is already credited with confirming the existence of one supernova and is used by students to research meteorite trajectories, variable stars, and other phenomena.
